I spoke
with
Cindy
Kohlmann
on
KDTH
radio
in
Dubuque
about
regulations
on
agriculture,
the
investigation
of
an
Iowa
veteran’s
suicide,
rising
health
insurance
premiums,
protections
for
nursing
home
residents
and
the
cash
payment
to
Iran
during
the
release
of
American
prisoners.
Q&A:
Pension
Oversight
Q.
Why
does
our
system
of
checks
and
balances
matter?
Q.
How
does
your
oversight
work
make
a
difference?

I sent
a
letter
to
the
Federal
Trade
Commission
and
the
Department
of
Justice
urging
them
to
collaborate
where
it’s
appropriate
as
the
agencies
analyze
several
proposed
mergers
in
the
seed
and
chemical
industries.
In
2013,
I
began
seeking
answers
from
the
State
Department
on
its
use
of
the
Special
Government
Employee
designation
after
revelations
that
a
top
aide,
Huma
Abedin,
used
the
special
status
to
work
at
the
State
Department
and
private
sector
entities
at
the
same
time.
I
asked
the
Government
Accountability
Office
to
investigate,
and
this
week
it released
a
worrisome
report
on
the
issue.
I’m asking
the
Department
of
Justice
to
explain
its
reported
decision
to
drop
inquiries
into
Clinton
Foundation
and
State
Department
interactions.
The
reported
declinations
came
amid
reports
of
favorable
action
from
the
State
Department
for
foundation
donors
and
concerns
that
foreign
government
donations
were
not
always
vetted
by
ethics
officers
as
required.
Staff
from
my Cedar
Rapids
office
will
hold
open
office
hours
at
locations
across
northeastern
Iowa
and
will
be
available
to
take
questions,
comments
and
concerns
about
federal
issues
from
Iowans.
