Sen. Rick Scott Asks U.S. Governors for Update on Coronavirus Response Spending

Senator Rick Scott led Senators Ron Johnson and Ted Cruz in a letter to U.S. Governors requesting information on how their states have allocated the trillions of dollars in taxpayer funding from the CARES Act and other federal coronavirus response measures. This taxpayer money is designed to be spent on coronavirus response to support those in need, and taxpayers deserve to know how this money is being spent. Senators Rick Scott and Tammy Baldwin Lead Colleagues in Bipartisan Resolution Calling on Americans to Buy Products Made in the U.S.

Senators Rick Scott and Tammy Baldwin announced their plan to introduce a bipartisan resolution calling on Americans to buy products made in the U.S. whenever possible in order to support American jobs and manufacturing, and help build up the U.S. supply chain. This resolution was also sponsored by Senators Kelly Loeffler, Chris Murphy, Mike Rounds, Sherrod Brown, Shelley Moore Capito, Tina Smith, Kevin Cramer, Gary Peters, Josh Hawley, Debbie Stabenow, Richard Blumenthal and Jack Reed. This resolution is also supported by the Coalition for a Prosperous America and the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Buying American products is the number one thing we can do to support American jobs and stand up to our foreign adversaries. We can no longer rely on countries like Communist China, who lied about the coronavirus and refuses to be a trustworthy partner, for our critical supply chain. Buying American is not partisan, and I’m glad my colleagues from both sides of the aisle are coming together to encourage all Americans to take a stand against Communist China and buy products made in the U.S.” Read more HERE.

Sens. Rick Scott, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio Introduce Bill to Stop the Flow of Money to the Cuban Regime

Senators Rick Scott, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio introduced the Cut Profits to the Cuban Regime Act, which will require the Department of State to publish the list of countries that contract with the Cuban regime for their medical missions program, and to consider that a factor on their ranking in the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons report.

Senator Rick Scott said, “Cuba is participating in the human trafficking of doctors, and now Cuba is using the coronavirus pandemic for profit at the expense of these hardworking physicians. It’s despicable. Any country that requests medical assistance from Cuba is aiding their human trafficking efforts. The international community must stand against the use of forced labor and the Cuban regime’s exploitation of this crisis, and I’m proud to lead my colleagues today in calling out this injustice and helping to bring a new day of freedom for the people of Cuba.” Read more HERE.

Senators Rick Scott, Rob Portman and Colleagues Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Stop Theft of U.S. Research & Intellectual Property by Communist China

Senator Rick Scott joined Senator Rob Portman and colleagues to introduce the Safeguarding American Innovation Act, bipartisan legislation to help stop foreign governments, including Communist China, from stealing American taxpayer-funded research and intellectual property developed at U.S. colleges and universities.

Senator Rick Scott said, “We should all be very concerned about the threat of Communist China and its attempts to steal U.S. research and intellectual property. Communist China has infiltrated our research institutions in an attempt to illicitly funnel knowledge and research back to mainland China. We cannot take this criminal action lightly. We have to remain vigilant and proactive, and this is an important step to protect American intellectual property from foreign influence.” Read more from Senator Portman's office HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott in Washington Examiner: Don’t defund the police. Fund the police.

Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for the Washington Examiner on why the radical Left’s calls to defund the police are dangerous.

In the op-ed, Senator Rick Scott wrote, “While the vast majority of police officers in Florida and around the country uphold their oath to serve and protect, people are right to call for reform and accountability to stop bad actors. We must find ways to keep communities safe and protect black lives with the same zeal all lives are protected.

But defunding or disarming the police is not the answer. Simply put, it is a dangerous proposal driven by the radical Left whose agenda of "Medicare for all," the Green New Deal, open borders, and defunding law enforcement is being increasingly embraced by the leaders of the Democratic Party.

… The goal of these proposals is to advance an extremist agenda, not seek genuine reforms that will protect communities and end racial violence. Stripping our brave men and women in uniform of the resources necessary to protect our communities would do nothing to keep people safe. In fact, this would endanger our communities more.

… Whatever your job is, there is a very high likelihood that it is less difficult, less taxing, less perilous, and less scrutinized than the job of law enforcement officials. Police officers across Florida and across the country risk their lives every day to keep people safe, and they deserve our appreciation. They uphold their oath to serve and protect.

I won’t let the radical Left use the crimes of a few bad actors to demonize good, hard-working police officers in Florida.

Don’t defund the police. Fund the police.”

Miami Herald: Scott’s New Bill Targets Countries that Hire Cuban Doctors Through Official ‘Missions’

In case you missed it, Senators Rick Scott, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio introduced the Cut Profits to the Cuban Regime Act, which will require the Department of State to publish the list of countries that contract with the Cuban regime for their medical missions program, and to consider that a factor on their ranking in the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons report.

Read more in the Miami Herald article, Scott’s new bill targets countries that hire Cuban doctors through official ‘missions’, below.

“A new bill introduced by Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott on Wednesday would target countries that hire Cuban doctors through the ‘medical missions’ controlled by the island’s government.

The Cut Profits to the Cuban Regime Act requires the State Department to publish the list of countries that contract the doctors through the Cuban government and to consider that as a factor in their ranking in the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons report.

Scott, who led the effort along with Cuban-American Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said the Cuban government was participating “in the human trafficking of doctors” and that any country that requests medical assistance from Cuba is aiding such efforts.

… The Cuban government has almost 30,000 healthcare workers contracted in more than 50 countries. And senators said the government was trying to profit from the pandemic too, as around 2,500 doctors and nurses have been sent to more than 20 nations to treat COVID-19 patients.”
