This week, Senator Romney continued to work on several of his key priorities for Utah, including addressing our state’s historic drought, increasingly devastating wildfires, and rapidly growing economy. On the national front, the Senator questioned big tech executives on China’s influence on the American public through social media and joined his colleagues in a proposal for federal permitting reform. Utah has been facing a record number of wildfires, and fire policies of the past simply aren’t working anymore. With the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill, Senator Romney secured into law the establishment of a commission to modernize and refresh our fire mitigation and management policies. The Commission’s first meeting was held this week in Salt Lake City!

Utah is rapidly expanding as a center for global commerce and tourism, is home to thousands of Latter-day Saints who annually embark on worldwide religious missions, and has a rapidly growing population. These factors have created a high demand for passport services in our state, but unfortunately, Utahns and those living in the region must travel long distances to reach the nearest passport office. Senator Romney’s measure to create a report on the geographical diversity of the United States’ passport agencies was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, giving momentum to the Senator’s effort to bring a passport agency to Utah.

During a committee hearing examining social media's impact on homeland security, Senator Romney questioned former social media company executives on the influence that authoritarian regimes, like the Chinese Communist Party, have on the American public through their growing social media capabilities.

Historic inflation poses significant challenges to businesses across our state. Senator Romney met with several chambers of commerce from across Utah to discuss how we can better support businesses amid this difficult and volatile economic landscape.

Communities in Utah and across the country are struggling to get critical infrastructure projects across the finish line due to the roadblocks and delays caused by our federal permitting process. Senator Romney joined 45 of his Senate Republican colleagues, led by Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), in introducing the Simplify Timelines and Assure Regulatory Transparency (START) Act, comprehensive federal regulatory permitting and project review reform legislation.

Weber State University is a fixture in the community, providing Utahns access to an excellent education and countless opportunities. Senator Romney met with WSU President Brad Mortensen for an update on the University, including efforts to support the region's national security industry.

Dropping levels of the Great Salt Lake pose a serious and alarming threat to Utah’s air quality, ecosystems, and economy. Senator Romney sat down with Box Elder County Commissioners Jeff Hadfield and Jeff Scott for a discussion on conserving water resources and other issues facing the County.

Throughout the week, Senator Romney met with several groups from Utah, including the Utah Direct Selling Coalition, Utah Automobile Dealers Association, Utah Bankers, Utah Credit Union Association, South Jordan City officials, Maverik CEO Chuck Maggelet, and Intermountain Healthcare leaders.
