Sen. Rick Scott Calls for Quick Response from States on Coronavirus Response Spending

Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after a majority of U.S. Governors refused to send timely information on how their states have allocated the trillions of dollars in taxpayer funding from the CARES Act and other federal coronavirus response measures. Last month, Senators Scott, Ron Johnson and Ted Cruz sent a letter to U.S. Governors requesting details on how this taxpayer money is being spent. So far, fewer than 10 states have responded.

Senator Rick Scott said, “State and local governments across our nation have received more than $1 trillion in taxpayer money to address the coronavirus pandemic. The public deserves information on exactly how this money is being allocated, which is why my colleagues and I requested details from each U.S. Governor. I thank those states that have been forthcoming with this information, but am very disappointed in the lack of response and transparency from the majority of states. The more information we have, the better off we are, especially in a crisis. I’m calling on every Governor to work with us to protect taxpayer dollars, and respond as quickly as possible." Read more HERE.

Sen. Rick Scott on Senate Floor: This Year’s NDAA Supports our Military and Protects U.S. Bases

Senator Rick Scott spoke on the Senate floor about the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes his Secure U.S. Bases Act to reform and improve foreign military student training programs following the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola on December 6th, 2019. Senator Scott is also working to protect Florida’s Gulf Coast from offshore drilling with his amendments to extend the current moratorium for 10 years and require the Department of Defense to report on the importance of the Gulf Test Range, which is currently used for vital military testing and training and is critical to our national security. Offshore drilling in the area would pose significant risks to the environment and economy. Watch the full speech HERE or below.

Sen. Rick Scott on Fox News: Government Must Inform, Not Mandate, and Trust Americans to Make the Right Decisions

Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for Fox News on how government needs to stop mandating and start giving the American people facts about the coronavirus, so they can make the right decisions for their families. Senator Scott also discussed his op-ed on Fox & Friends this morning – watch the full interview HERE.

In the op-ed, Senator Rick Scott wrote, “I understand the need to do no harm to others. That’s why I’ve consistently and vocally urged people in Florida and across the country to wear masks, social distance and stay home as much as possible. People ignoring these warnings are being selfish – they’re not only putting their own health at risk, but also the health and well-being of their families, friends and coworkers.

In a free society we have the right to act stupid, and we tend to regularly exercise that right. But if you are ignoring commonsense precautions, you are not only endangering yourself and others, you are also prolonging the economic pain for this country. If we want to get our country open again, get people back to work and get our economy to kick into gear, Americans must heed warns to take this threat seriously.

In the end, elected officials must trust the American people and value their right to make their own decisions and be responsible for their own outcomes.

… Our elected leaders can’t sugar coat where we are. Give us the facts and what they believe we need to do to beat this. The American people will make the right decisions for their families. We will hold each other accountable. Our businesses will figure out how to keep employees and customers safe.

The American people just want to get back to work, to school and to church and they don’t want the government to tell them what to do.

Together we will beat this, just like we always do."
