Rescuing programs like Social Security and Medicare—which face impending insolvency—has long-been a top priority for Senator Romney. Unfortunately, instead of working across the aisle on a bipartisan solution, Washington Democrats have chosen to spread false accusations that members of Congress are out to cut these programs. This week, Senator Romney grilled a Biden Administration official on the President’s recently proposed budget that ignores the real threats to Social Security. He also helped reintroduce bipartisan legislation to develop a strategy in the Black Sea, where a Russian fighter jet recently hit a U.S. drone, and supported a resolution opposing a new Biden rule limiting Americans’ Second Amendment rights. He finished his week in Washington serving his colleagues a Utah favorite: Freshie’s lobster rolls from Park City. Scroll for more news.

It's dishonest—even offensive—that the Biden Administration is ignoring the real threat to Social Security, its imminent insolvency, and instead repeating a false talking point that Republicans are out to cut benefits. No members of Congress, from either party, want to cut benefits. But if real action isn't taken—and taken soon—the Social Security trust fund will run out and benefits will be automatically cut. Unfortunately, President Biden seems to value political posturing over actually saving the program.

At a Budget Committee hearing to discuss the President’s budget, Senator Romney engaged in a heated exchange with Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young who claimed that members of Congress are proposing cutting benefits for current Social Security recipients.

Russia's recent provocation against a U.S. drone in the Black Sea underscores the need for a revamped strategy in the region. We can't leave it to Putin to define the rules of the Black Sea. Senators Romney and Shaheen (D-NH) reintroduced their bipartisan legislation that would direct the Biden Administration to develop a strategy toward the Black Sea region, which has increasingly become a critical inflection point for European and global security amid Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked war in Ukraine.

Upon the closure of Silicon Valley Bank last week, Senator Romney stated: “Regional and local banks are critical to starting and supporting small businesses of all kinds. The federal government must act immediately to assure depositors at SVB and at regional and local banks everywhere that their deposits are completely safe. The immediate and long-term consequences of failure to do so could be extreme.”

Following action by the Administration to step in—which Senator Romney applauded as the “right decision”—the Senator participated in a Silicon Slopes virtual town hall with Utah state and business leaders to discuss the SVB closure and subsequent actions. He urged for folks to put politics aside while we try and figure out how to best support the businesses in Utah and across the country.

If you’re looking for a delicious lobster roll, don’t look past Utah! Senator Romney served Freshie’s Lobster Co. from Park City—home of the 2017 “World’s Best Lobster Roll”—at a lunch he hosted for his fellow Republican senators.

The menu included a charcuterie board of local meats and cheeses, lobster rolls, BBQ chicken sandwiches, clam chowder, Maine-iac salad, and grilled asparagus. The senators also enjoyed a dessert of blueberry and apple pies. Lorin Macri, founder and owner of Freshie's, flew in from Utah to serve the lobster rolls to the group.

The Biden Administration’s recent stabilizing pistol brace rule is blatant federal overreach—adding burdensome regulations on law-abiding gun owners. The Administration should focus on cracking down on violent crime, not punishing law-abiding Americans. Senator Romney joined more than 40 of his Senate Republican colleagues in introducing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from enforcing an anti-Second Amendment brace rule.

Continued investment in Utah's transportation systems is needed to support our growing economy and ensure our ability to host world-renowned events like the Olympics. Senator Romney met with Utah Transit Authority leaders to discuss improving and expanding public transportation along the Wasatch Front.
