America has long been considered the leader of the free world—a role that requires continued commitment to supporting democracy, countering authoritarianism, and promoting freedom globally. The U.S. must not waver in this resolve, especially as countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea have garnered greater geopolitical influence amid attacks on democratic nations. We are a safer, and more prosperous, nation when we lead from a position of strength. This week, Senator Romney continued to push for aid to Ukraine and Israel, made efforts to counter antisemitism on American college campuses, and pressed the Biden Administration on their complete failure at the southern border. It’s no coincidence that unprecedented levels of illegal immigration began when President Biden took office. This Administration has had nearly three years to enact commonsense policies to curb this crisis and fix the broken asylum system, yet their inaction has only made matters worse. They must get serious and work with Congress on finding commonsense solutions to solve the crisis at our southern border. At a Homeland Security Committee hearing, Senator Romney pressed DHS Secretary Mayorkas on the Administration’s continued failure to secure the southern border and questioned FBI Director Wray about the alarming increase in threats and violence against religious groups—particularly against Jews.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Israel last month, there has been a disturbing rise of antisemitism on college campuses. Senator Romney joined Senator Cassidy (R-LA) and several of his Republican Education Committee (HELP) colleagues in urging Senator Sanders, HELP Committee Chairman, to hold a hearing to ensure the Administration is upholding its legal responsibility to protect Jewish students on college campuses.

Supporting both Ukraine and Israel is integral to safeguarding freedom and tempering the imperialistic ambitions of authoritarians. Senator Romney met with the French Ambassador to the U.S. Laurent Bili for a discussion on coalescing transatlantic support for democracies amid escalating attacks from belligerent autocratic actors.

Our reliance on China for critical minerals—including those essential to our industrial base—threatens our national security. Imposing additional red tape on domestic mining permits only strengthens China's near monopoly on the global supply of critical minerals. Senator Romney joined Senator Sullivan (R-AK) and 20 colleagues in sending a letter to the executive director of the Federal Permitting Improvement Steering Council demanding the Council rescind its proposal to limit the type of mining projects eligible for the improved permitting process established under Title 41 of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act. We should be doing all that we can to facilitate additional mining projects, and the Administration's new rule does the opposite.

On Halloween, Senator Romney hosted some furry friends in the Senate for a “Bipawtisan Howl-o-ween Dog Parade,” an event organized each year by Senator Tillis (R-NC). The Romney office (hot) dog, Goldie, was the star of the show!

We must ensure that our veterans are properly cared for—including addressing the growing backlog of claims at the VA. Senator Romney discussed efforts to increase support for disabled veterans with Disabled American Veterans Commander Nancy Espinosa, who happens to be a fellow Utahn!
