As China continues its quest to become the global superpower, the United States must remain diligent about safeguarding American technology. This week, Senator Romney focused on strengthening export controls enforcement—a key national security tool—to help ensure U.S. technology is not acquired or used by our adversaries. He introduced legislation to support interagency enforcement efforts and led an Emerging Threats Subcommittee hearing with Administration witnesses on the topic. Also critical to managing the emergence of China is the U.S. alliance with Japan. Upon Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to Washington, Senator Romney introduced a resolution underscoring the strength and importance of this alliance. Keep scrolling for more news:

The United States leads the world in technological innovation and countries like China, Russia, and Iran go to great lengths to acquire our sensitive technologies, like semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Export controls are a key national security tool the federal government can employ to protect American technology from being acquired and used by our adversaries.

Senators Romney and Hassan (D-NH) introduced bipartisan legislation that would ensure that the interagency Export Enforcement Coordination Center has the resources it needs to effectively lead export controls enforcement and coordination efforts. The senators also led an Emerging Threats Subcommittee hearing with Administration officials to discuss ways to strengthen export controls enforcement.

Updates to Utah Transit Authority’s public transit services will help better connect our communities and improve accessibility. Senator Romney met with members of UTA’s Board of Trustees for an update on Frontrunner’s doubletracking project and modernization efforts—which were funded, in part, by the bipartisan infrastructure bill.

The United States’ alliance with Japan is fundamental to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. At a time of growing military aggression by China in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, we must remain committed to strengthening diplomatic ties and security cooperation with Japan and work toward our shared strategic interests. In addition to attending Prime Minister Kishida’s address to a Joint Session of Congress, Senator Romney and his colleagues introduced a bipartisan resolution underscoring the strength and importance of the United States-Japan alliance as Prime Minister Kishida visited Washington.

With the national debt now exceeding $34 trillion, Congress should pursue commonsense solutions—like leveraging data analytics—to combat fraud and protect taxpayer dollars. Senator Romney’s bipartisan legislation with Senator Peters (D-MI) to strengthen oversight of federal funds vulnerable to fraud passed out of the Governmental Affairs Committee and now awaits consideration by the full Senate.

During a Foreign Relations hearing, Senator Romney questioned USAID Administrator Samantha Power about how the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) prioritizes the funds it delivers.

Faith is often a great source of comfort for those in harm’s way or those who may be suffering. Senator Romney met with a group of BYU Chaplaincy Graduate Students who will soon take on the role of serving the men and women in our armed services and patients in hospitals.
