1 BIG THING: CONFIRMING COLORADO’S NEXT FEDERAL JUDGE
What’s happening: As Colorado’s population continues to grow, the U.S. District Court for Colorado’s caseload has reached the highest level since the Court started tracking this data. That’s why it’s more important than ever to fill vacancies on the court with qualified and experienced jurists.
What I’m doing: Over the past three years, I have helped nominate and confirm four judges to our state’s District Court. In 2022, I recommended Judge Kato Crews to fill a fifth vacant seat.
Good news: This week, the Senate confirmed Judge Crews with a bipartisan vote. Judge Crews is a Pueblo native with extensive experience as both a litigator and a judge, and he will make a remarkable addition to Colorado’s District Court. Ahead of his confirmation vote, I spoke on the Senate floor in support of Crews – watch my remarks below.
2. SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES THAT RECEIVE MIGRANTS
What’s happening: Colorado continues to experience a surge of migrants arriving in our state, which has strained the resources of many of our nonprofit organizations and local governments providing support.
What I’ve done: Last week, I called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to do more to support communities and nonprofits assisting migrants as new buses arrive from the southern border almost every day.
What I’m doing: I won’t stop demanding swift action from FEMA to help our state handle this challenge. This week, I joined Denver 7 to sound the alarm on Colorado’s needs. Watch my interview below.
3. A STEP FORWARD FOR OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM
What I believe: The U.S. immigration system is broken and migrant children – who show up to immigration court proceedings alone, afraid, and with no idea about what to expect – suffer its dysfunction most.
What I’m working on: Last year, I introduced a bipartisan, common sense bill to establish a separate pathway for children in immigration court that would reduce the court’s backlog, ensure unaccompanied children understand their court proceedings and speed up processing time for both children and adults.
Good news: The U.S. Department of Justice announced it will establish a specialized juvenile docket for immigration court proceedings in line with my legislation. This is an important step to reform our immigration system and treat kids fleeing violence and persecution with the dignity they deserve.
