1 BIG THING: FIGHTING CHILD POVERTY
What happened: Two years ago, Congress expanded the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and helped cut child poverty nearly in half. That expansion was Washington’s most significant investment in kids and families in generations, and it served as a lifeline for millions of families struggling with the rising costs of raising a child in America. When Congress let this tax credit expire, child poverty more than doubled.
Good news: This week, lawmakers unveiled a bipartisan agreement that would extend the CTC once again. The deal would benefit as many as 16 million children in its first year, including over 190,000 kids in Colorado.
What I’m doing: We need to pass this bill into law, and after we do, I’ll keep fighting to make the expanded CTC permanent. This week, I joined CNN to talk about the importance of this deal. Watch my interview below.
2. CALLING ON CONGRESS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITIES RECEIVING MIGRANTS
What’s happening: Colorado communities are stepping up to support migrants arriving in our state, but they need more assistance from Washington to meet this challenge. That’s why earlier this month, I called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to do more to support communities and nonprofits assisting migrants.
What I’m doing: This week, I brought together members of Colorado’s Congressional delegation alongside Denver Mayor Mike Johnston to call on Congress to take urgent action to support communities in Colorado that are receiving migrants.
3. PROTECTING THE COLORADO RIVER
What happened: For over a year, I have joined Coloradans speaking out against the Uinta Basin Railway Project, a proposal to ship billions of gallons of heated oil alongside the headwaters of the Colorado River every year. In March, Colorado U.S. Representative Joe Neguse and I urged the federal government to complete an additional review of the risks the railway could pose to Colorado. In August, a federal court agreed with Coloradans that the approval process for the project had been gravely insufficient.
Good news: This week, the U.S. Forest Service announced that it would withdraw the proposed Railway’s permit because of a flawed environmental review. This is another important step toward stopping this dangerous oil train from traveling along the lifeblood of the American West.
What I believe: This train has no business bringing heated waxy, crude oil through Colorado, period. I'll always fight to protect the Colorado River for the tens of millions of people who depend on it.
