A message from Senator Michael Bennet

1 BIG THING: SUPPORTING FAMILY CAREGIVERS

What’s happening: As our family members get older, many Americans become caregivers to parents, spouses, and other loved ones so they can continue to live independently. Nationwide, more than 48 million Americans are caregivers, including approximately 600,000 people in Colorado.

What I believe: These family caregivers are the backbone of our care system – often at a significant financial cost to themselves. Caregivers provide about $600 billion in unpaid, selfless care each year, and Congress should do everything it can to make things easier for them.

What I did: This week, I brought together bipartisan members of the U.S. Senate and House to reintroduce the Credit for Caring Act. Our common-sense legislation would provide a tax credit of up to $5,000 for family caregivers to lessen their financial strain and cover their out-of-pocket expenses. I joined my colleagues, leaders from AARP, and caregivers from across the country on Wednesday to urge Congress to pass this important legislation.

2. LOOKING BACK: KEEPING SPACE COMMAND IN COLORADO

What happened: Three years ago, the Trump administration made a political decision to move U.S. Space Command from Colorado to Alabama. Together, we fought that decision at every turn, and made the case to military leaders and the Biden administration that keeping Space Command in Colorado was the right decision for our national security and military readiness. Over the summer, President Biden announced that Space Command would stay in Colorado Springs. Now, the Command has reached Full Operational Capability. Our national security is stronger as a result.

Looking back: I sat down with Colorado Public Radio to talk about my efforts to keep Space Command in Colorado and how our state will continue to lead America in space for years to come.

Tax season started this week: With tax season officially underway, the Internal Revenue Service announced that nearly 250 Taxpayer Assistance Centers around the country will extend their weekly office hours through the April 15 tax filing deadline.

How to get help: Coloradans can find assistance near them by calling 844-545-5640 or visiting apps.irs.gov/app/office-locator.
