1 BIG THING: THE STATE OF THE UNION
Joining my State of the Union guest, Marina, for a conversation ahead of the President’s speech.
In Ukraine: Since Vladimir Putin started his lawless war against Ukraine, the Ukrainian people have sacrificed their lives and won battle after battle against all odds in their fight for democracy.
In Colorado: In response to Putin’s aggression, organizations like Ukrainians of Colorado, stepped up to provide assistance to refugees who settled in our state and send desperately needed medical supplies to Ukraine’s frontlines.
In Washington: Last month, the Senate voted to send Ukraine additional aid as they continue their fight against Putin. However, the House has yet to take action on the bill.
This week: To send a signal to Congress that our work is not done, I invited the President of Ukrainians of Colorado, Marina Dubrova, to be my guest at President Biden’s State of the Union address. I’m honored that she joined me at the SOTU. Watch our conversation ahead of the speech.
2. TRAVELING TO THE MIDDLE EAST
Meeting with Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant and other leaders.
What happened: Last weekend, I traveled to Jordan, the West Bank, and Israel alongside U.S. Senator Cory Booker to meet with regional leaders and reaffirm America’s commitment to long-term peace in the Middle East. We were the first Senators to visit the West Bank since the devastating October 7th attacks.
What I believe: In the wake of Hamas' deadly rampage on October 7, Israel has a duty to defend its citizens, secure release of the hostages, and defeat Hamas. But, the way in which Israel conducts this war matters. Degrading Hamas’ military capabilities and delivering aid to and protecting Palestinian civilians cannot be mutually exclusive. And last night at the State of the Union, I urged President Biden and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to continue their efforts to push Israel to allow the delivery of more humanitarian aid to Gaza.
What’s next: I returned home with the firm belief that the United States must continue to play a leadership role in shaping a more peaceful and prosperous Middle East. I believe that a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians is the only solution that can endure. I’ll keep fighting for a two-state solution that ensures Israel’s security and fulfills Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for self-determination.
3. COUNTERING CHINA’S INFLUENCE IN THE AMERICAS
Speaking with diplomatic leaders in Mexico City in October 2023.
What’s happening: No region has greater ties to the United States than Latin America and the Caribbean. Yet, in recent years, as China grows its influence in the region, the U.S. has failed to offer a compelling economic alternative.
What I’m doing: This week, I reintroduced a bipartisan bill with colleagues in the House and Senate to renew our partnerships across the Western Hemisphere. Our bill will grow trade and investment across the Western Hemisphere and increase safety and stability to decrease regional migration.
