1 BIG THING: VISITING SPACE COMMAND

Image

Touring Peterson Space Force Base

What happened: In July, the U.S. Air Force officially announced Colorado as the permanent home for U.S. Space Command, and in December, Space Command reached Full Operational Capability (FOC), meaning it has the staff and structure in place to meet its mission.

What I did: This week, I visited Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs for the first time since Space Command reached FOC. During my visit, I met with military leaders to learn more about the development of Space Command’s new headquarters and hear how Colorado’s military installations are helping safeguard our country in the face of new and emerging threats.

What I believe: I’m grateful to have visited with some of the men and women defending our country. Thanks to Colorado’s extensive national security assets and its robust aerospace economy, there’s no state better positioned to lead the U.S. in space.

2. PROTECTING THE THOMPSON DIVIDE

Image

What I’ve done: For over a decade, I’ve worked with ranchers, hunters, anglers, local governments and conservationists to protect the Thompson Divide and Mt. Emmons, two treasured areas on Colorado’s Western Slope.

What happened: This week, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced a 20-year mineral withdrawal in the Thompson Divide. The withdrawal will prohibit future oil and gas leasing and new mining in the region, protecting over 221,000 acres of public land, safeguarding our watersheds and wildlife, and strengthening Colorado’s outdoor recreation economy.

What’s next: This announcement is a testament to the persistence of Coloradans and their unrelenting work to protect the landscape we all love. Now, we need to pass the Colorado Outdoor Recreation & Economy (CORE) Act to make the withdrawal permanent and protect this land for generations to come.

3. REINFORCING AMERICAN SUPPORT IN THE INDO-PACIFIC

Meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida

What I did: Last week, I joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to visit the Indo-Pacific and speak with government officials and military leaders about our shared economic, security, and climate priorities. During our visits, we underscored America’s lasting support for our partners in the region and demonstrated our continued commitment to these priorities.

Highlights: In Japan, we met Prime Minister Kishida ahead of his visit to Washington D.C. next week and discussed Japan’s historic strengthening of its defense capabilities. During our visit to the Philippines, we met President Marcos to discuss our growing defense and economic partnership and reaffirmed our commitment to the Philippines amid China’s provocations in the South China Sea. We also traveled to Vietnam and South Korea. See more pictures here.
