1 BIG THING: DEFENDING DEMOCRACY AT HOME AND ABROAD
Looking back: Since Putin’s lawless invasion two years ago, Ukraine has fought bravely for its freedom. I’ve consistently pushed to secure continued military and humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian people as they continue their fight for democracy.
Great news: This week, Congress finally passed legislation extending nearly $61 billion in desperately-needed aid to Ukraine with strong bipartisan votes in the House and Senate. After months of delays from Republican isolationists, we finally overcame our political divisions to fulfill this important obligation.
What I believe: With this vote, America has shown the world’s tyrants that democracies will stand together when threatened. I’m relieved that we acted in the best interest of not only Ukraine, but U.S. national security and democracies around the world. I joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss this great moment in American history ahead of the vote.
2. CELEBRATING EARTH DAY
Hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park last summer
What happened: On Monday, we celebrated Earth Day. With the Inflation Reduction Act, we made the biggest climate investment in U.S. history – but our work isn't done.
What I believe: We must keep working to achieve net-zero emissions, transition to a clean energy economy, and tackle climate change head-on. Earth Day's call to action is an important reminder that it’s up to all of us to protect our planet for the next generation.
What I did: This week, I called on the Biden administration to invest in outdoor recreation projects for rural communities to increase access to the outdoors and foster an economy that works for everyone.
3. HEARING FROM COLORADANS
Touring an affordable housing manufacturing facility in Buena Vista
Learning about local wildfire mitigation efforts outside of Fairplay
On the road: One of the greatest parts of my job is traveling throughout Colorado to hear how we can continue to work together to strengthen our local economies. This week, I traveled to Park, Chaffee, and Adams counties.
What I did: In Adams County, I helped break ground on a critical water infrastructure project; I heard from local leaders about housing, transportation, and public safety challenges in Bailey; I stopped by a community’s wildfire mitigation efforts just outside of Fairplay; and I toured an affordable housing manufacturing facility in Buena Vista.
What I believe: In every county, housing is at the top of everybody’s list of challenges. That’s why I was so encouraged to see how Colorado’s companies are meeting this challenge, creating good jobs in their communities, and building high-quality, affordable housing options.
