1 BIG THING: MARKING 80 YEARS SINCE D-DAY

Image

Looking back: This week, we marked 80 years since D-Day, when over 2,500 U.S. troops gave their lives to face one of the greatest evils in the history of the modern world. As a result, families across Europe – including my mother and grandparents – were saved from abject cruelty.

What I believe: The courage of American heroes like Colorado’s own Steven Melnikoff and Donald Cobb – who are still with us today – helped defeat that evil. As we mark this anniversary, we must continue to honor their sacrifices by recommitting to stand firm against tyrants and violent dictators worldwide.

What I did: In honor of the anniversary of this important moment in world history, I sat down to share some of my thoughts and express my gratitude for the brave Americans who fought for the freedoms we continue to enjoy to this day.

2. PROTECTING AMERICANS’ ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION

Image

What’s happening: Two years ago, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade stripped women of their right to choose. Today, women across the country continue to face barriers to access reproductive health care, including contraception.

This week: I voted to pass the Right to Contraception Act to help more Americans access family planning and essential reproductive health care services – but Republicans blocked it. This is unacceptable.

What I believe: As states across the country continue to restrict Americans' access to reproductive health care, we must continue our fight to protect the right to contraception. I'll keep doing everything I can to ensure women in Colorado and across the country can make decisions about their bodies and futures.

3. IMPROVING MAIL SERVICE FOR OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES

Image

What’s happening: Alongside my Colorado colleagues, I’ve repeatedly called on the United States Postal Service (USPS) to improve mail service for Coloradans. However, many of our state’s rural communities continue to face mail delays and untimely service due in part to USPS staffing issues and resource shortages.

This week: With Senator Hickenlooper and Colorado U.S. Representatives Brittany Pettersen and Joe Neguse, I sent a letter again urging USPS to address personnel recruitment and retention, and increase pay to hire more postal workers. I’ll continue working with USPS to ensure it has a strong workforce to provide timely, reliable mail service for every Coloradan.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • Happy Pride Month, Colorado! This month, we stand up for love in all its forms and recommit ourselves to achieving equality for all.
  • I welcomed $90 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for the Arkansas Valley Conduit. I’ll keep fighting to ensure the federal government keeps its word and finishes this project to deliver safe and reliable water for Southeast Colorado once and for all.
  • June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. It’s time to pass common-sense gun safety legislation like the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act.
