1 BIG THING: CONNECTING WITH COLORADANS IN WASHINGTON

Image

Hosting a panel with journalists at the Colorado Capital Conference

This week: I was honored to host this year’s Colorado Capital Conference alongside Colorado U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper. This annual event is an opportunity for Coloradans to hear from leaders in Washington about how we are working to advance their priorities.

Some highlights: During the conference, attendees heard from a lineup of incredible speakers – from U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. They also joined in on important discussions with experts on everything from artificial intelligence to America’s global partnerships.

What I believe: One of my favorite parts of this job is speaking with my constituents about the issues that matter to them. I was glad to meet with so many Coloradans and share ideas to make our state stronger.

2. LISTENING TO COLORADANS ABOUT THE DOLORES RIVER

Visiting the Dolores River and hearing from Coloradans during a public forum in Nucla

What’s happening: For Coloradans, the Dolores River is more than just a landmark – it's the lifeblood of our communities.

What I did: Last weekend, I traveled to Colorado’s Western Slope to hear residents’ diverse perspectives on the proposed Dolores National Monument plan. I’m especially grateful to the over 500 Coloradans who I heard from during a public forum in Nucla.

What I believe: It’s clear that Coloradans love this precious landscape, and want to find a way to keep it the way it is for the next generation. I look forward to continuing to work with Coloradans on this important local issue.

3. FIGHTING TO PROTECT REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM

Meeting with reproductive health advocate Lauren Miller

What’s happening: This week, I sat down with Lauren Miller, a Texas woman who was forced to travel to Colorado after she was denied an abortion by the state of Texas despite suffering severe complications during her pregnancy. Lauren is not alone – since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, we’ve seen attack after attack on reproductive freedom.

What I’m doing: I welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision this week to uphold access to the abortion pill mifepristone. I also voted to pass the Right to IVF Act to establish a nationwide right to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Unfortunately, Senate Republicans blocked this bill from passing the Senate.

What I believe: I will always stand up for a woman’s right to choose and will keep doing everything I can to ensure every American has control over their bodies and futures.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I’m wishing Coloradans a happy Father's Day this weekend. It is the honor of my life to be Dad to my three daughters, Halina, Caroline, and Anne.
  • I urged the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to closely examine the oil facility permits that could send hundreds of thousands of gallons of hazardous oil through our state. If oil transport by rail increases, so do the risks to Colorado’s water, land, air, and climate.
  • Colorado National History Day students stopped by to chat with me and Senator Hickenlooper this week. I was glad to meet with this inspiring group of young people to discuss the importance of studying history to understand our world today.
