1 BIG THING: IMPROVING OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Image

What happened: More than a decade ago, the Affordable Care Act expanded health insurance coverage to an additional 20 million Americans and established protections for pre-existing conditions. However, many Americans still face high health care costs and unaffordable health insurance – including here in Colorado.

What I believe: In the richest country in the world, we have a responsibility to achieve universal health coverage and create the best health care system possible. A public health insurance option would improve access to care, reduce costs, and cover everyone regardless of where they live.

This week: Alongside Virginia U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, I reintroduced my Medicare-X Choice Act to create a public option. Our plan would increase access to affordable health insurance, decrease the number of uninsured Americans, lower the cost of health care, and drive competition in the health insurance market.

2. COMMEMORATING JUNETEENTH

Image

Looking back: On June 19th, we mark the day that the news of the end of slavery reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas. Each year, this holiday is an opportunity to celebrate emancipation and reflect on the injustice of slavery.

What’s next: Slavery continues to have a lasting legacy in so many of our modern institutions – from our schools to our criminal justice system. On Juneteenth and always, we must remember our shared responsibility to confront and dismantle the systemic racism that plagues every aspect of our society.

3. SUPPORTING COLORADO FARMERS’ MENTAL HEALTH

Image

What’s happening: Agriculture is the backbone of Colorado’s economy, but as climate-fueled disasters intensify, our state’s farmers and ranchers are paying the price. They face unprecedented threats to their ability to make a living and their mental health.

What I did: This week, the Senate passed my bipartisan “Mental Health Awareness in Agriculture Day” with Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer. I’ll always fight to ensure that the people who keep America fed have the resources they need to thrive.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • The U.S. Forest Service finalized the acquisition of the Zink parcel as part of the San Juan National Forest’s Falls Creek Conservation Area. I’m thankful for the work of local leaders to ensure Coloradans will be able to enjoy wildlife and recreational opportunities in this area for generations to come.
  • The Biden Administration approved Colorado's plan to use $826 million in funding to implement the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment Program (BEAD). These dollars will expand access to affordable and reliable internet, especially in our rural areas, low-income neighborhoods, and communities of color.
