1 BIG THING: IMPROVING AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR COLORADANS

Image

What’s happening: Across Colorado, I constantly hear about the lack of affordable housing, particularly in our mountain and rural communities. It’s unacceptable that so many of our state’s teachers, firefighters, police, and nurses can’t afford to live where they work.

What I did: I’ve fought for years to address Colorado’s housing crisis and provide new opportunities for growth in rural communities through my Forest Service Flexible Housing Partnerships Act. This bill, which was signed into law in the 2018 Farm Bill, would allow municipalities to lease unused land from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to build housing and address other local needs.

This week: USFS announced plans to use this authority to build new, affordable workforce housing in rural Colorado. This is a great step, and I look forward to working with USFS and local leaders to build upon these efforts.

3. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • This week marks 12 years since a gunman took the lives of 12 innocent Coloradans at a movie theater in Aurora. As we honor those lost that day, we must continue fighting to end senseless gun violence.
  • I introduced legislation to invest in workforce training programs that are proven to create economic mobility for workers of every background. Learn more here
  • The 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics start next week and I’m thrilled that so many Coloradans have qualified to compete. Coloradans planning to travel to Paris to cheer on Team USA should review this important safety information ahead of their trip.
