1 BIG THING: FIGHTING CHILDHOOD POVERTY
What I believe: It’s unacceptable that Washington has spent decades cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans instead of investing in our country’s children. I’m concerned that my generation will be the first to leave our kids and grandkids with less opportunity, not more.
What happened: On Thursday, my Republican colleagues sank a bipartisan tax bill that passed the House with over 350 votes. It would have cut taxes for working people, extended the Child Tax Credit to more families, increased the supply of affordable housing, and helped small businesses invest in research and innovation. Ahead of the vote, I spoke on the Senate floor to urge my colleagues to support this important package.
What I believe: This week’s vote was a chance to turn the page on failed trickle-down economics and fight childhood poverty. I’m disappointed that so many of my colleagues turned their backs on our kids and voted against this common-sense relief for families nationwide.
2. PROTECTING KIDS ONLINE
What’s happening: In Colorado and across the country, children and teenagers’ mental health is at an all-time low, and addictive social media platforms are largely to blame.
Good news: This week, I voted to pass the Kids Online Safety Act – the first significant bill protecting children online since the advent of the internet. This bill takes significant steps to safeguard kids’ mental health and privacy, but we must do more to hold tech companies accountable for their platforms’ harmful effects.
What’s next: I’m still fighting to pass my Digital Platform Commission Act, the first-of-its-kind legislation to establish a commission to regulate social media platforms, hold Big Tech companies accountable, and protect kids online.
3. LISTENING TO COLORADANS
What I believe: My favorite part of my job is speaking with Coloradans about the issues that matter to them. From drought and wildfire to rising costs and the state of our democracy, constituent feedback is the foundation of my work in the Senate.
What’s happening: On Tuesday, August 6, I’m hosting a town hall in Granby. Although not required, you can RSVP here. I look forward to listening to your ideas and concerns and taking them back with me to Washington.
