1 BIG THING: DELIVERING CLEAN WATER FOR COLORADANS

Image

What I’ve done: For over a decade, I’ve fought to ensure the federal government makes good on its promise to Southeastern Coloradans and finishes the Arkansas Valley Conduit (AVC). This vital project will provide safe, clean water to nearly 40 communities and 50,000 Coloradans along the Arkansas River.

This week: Alongside Senator John Hickenlooper and Representative Lauren Boebert, I introduced legislation to finish the AVC. Our bill will help underserved communities in Southeastern Colorado access clean drinking water and repay the federal government.

What’s next: We’re closer than ever to getting this project over the finish line and we must ensure increased costs don’t stop it in its tracks. I will continue fighting alongside Coloradans to get this done once and for all.

2. CREATING AN ECONOMY THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

Image

What’s happening: The United States is the richest country in the world, but many working Americans live with daily economic anxiety. As I travel throughout our state, Coloradans tell me that no matter how hard they work, they can’t provide their kids with a middle-class life, and that’s in part because our tax code rewards generational wealth over hard work.

What I believe: We can't keep giving tax breaks to the richest Americans by borrowing money and expecting the next generation to pay for them.

What I did: This week, I spoke at a Senate Finance Committee hearing about the importance of supporting policies like the Child Tax Credit that put money directly in the pockets of the families who need it the most. It's time to get serious about tackling our deficit, putting kids first, and creating an economy that works for everyone.

3. IMPROVING COLORADO ROAD SAFETY

Image

Good news: We welcomed $28.6 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for 11 Colorado communities. This investment – which includes over $15 million to improve Highway 135 in Gunnison – will help Colorado meet the needs of our growing population, fuel our local economies, and improve the safety of our roadways.

What I believe: This is another great example of the Bipartisan Infrastructure law delivering for Colorado. These investments will be vital as we work to make our roads safer in every corner of our state.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • Saturday is the Rocky Mountain Showdown, when the University of Colorado and Colorado State University battle it out for the Centennial Cup. Good luck to both the Buffaloes and the Rams.
  • Next year, Coloradans will be able to file their taxes directly to the Internal Revenue Service through the new Direct File program. This will make filing taxes easier, simpler, and cheaper for hardworking Colorado families for years to come.
  • I spoke with members of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union about some of the issues affecting Colorado’s farmers and ranchers – from labor shortages to long-term drought. I’ll keep fighting for a Farm Bill that recognizes the needs of Western agriculture and gives more certainty to producers across the state.
