Dear Friend,

Putting a Coloradan on the Supreme Court

Colorado’s Neil Gorsuch is an exceptional choice to serve on the Supreme Court, and I was honored to cast my vote for him. Throughout the confirmation process, I urged my colleagues to support this supremely qualified, mainstream jurist who will serve our country well. Justice Gorsuch has a deep understanding of Western issues and future generations of Coloradans will benefit from his service to our country. Both Democrats and Republicans in Colorado who know Gorsuch best supported his confirmation to the Court. They have praised Gorsuch as one of the brightest legal minds in the country and have seen the thoughtful approach he took while serving on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. It is a proud time for Colorado and the United States has much to look forward to with Justice Neil Gorsuch serving on the Supreme Court.

Permanent Reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund

I joined my colleagues, including Senators Richard Burr (R-NC) and Michael Bennet (D-CO), to introduce legislation to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which would fully realize LWCF’s promise to conserve parks, open spaces, and wildlife habitat for the benefit of hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

LWCF is essential to protect Colorado’s natural treasures and I have long supported a permanent reauthorization of this program. This bipartisan, commonsense legislation is supported by countless Coloradans and Americans who want to protect our country’s public lands for future generations to enjoy. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues to see permanent reauthorization of LWCF signed into law.

Holding Congress Accountable in the Event of a Government Shutdown

Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) and I introduced a resolution to pressure Congress to avoid or quickly end a government shutdown.

Coloradans expect their elected officials to do their jobs and work together to avoid shutting down the federal government. I urge my colleagues to support this legislation and prove we are a responsible governing body that will do whatever it takes to reopen the government in the event of a shutdown. I’m proud to work with Senator Michael Bennet on this effort and show the country that, regardless of party, Coloradans will never quit working for the American people.

Protecting our Science and Research Community

I sent a bipartisan letter with Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) in support of a substantial increase in federal funding for science, research, and development at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The United States is facing fierce international competition: China invests more than $335 billion annually on research and development initiatives, making them the second largest investor in the world and putting them on track to eclipse U.S. investments soon. Without a substantial increase in research and development appropriations, the United States risks losing its role as the global leader in innovation. We must keep America first.

Protecting Coloradans Right to Privacy

Last week, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and I sent a letter to Secretary Kelly at the Department of Homeland Security seeking clarification about why U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) would seek to unmask a private individual’s personal information. Reports indicated that CBP requested the identity of a Twitter user who frequently criticizes the government. Our right to free speech is enshrined in the Constitution and we must remain vigilant to ensure it is upheld—including allowing individuals to criticize their government—and I look forward to receiving Secretary Kelly’s response to our letter.
