1 BIG THING: PROTECTING WESTERN COLORADO’S PUBLIC LANDS

Image

Hiking in Gunnison County Last Summer.

Looking back: For over a decade, Colorado’s local governments, Tribes, and public land user groups have come together at trailheads and kitchen tables to share their love for the spectacular landscape in and around Gunnison County.

This week: Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Coloradans, Senator Hickenlooper and I introduced legislation this week to permanently protect over 730,000 acres of public lands in the Gunnison Basin and surrounding regions. Our bill will help safeguard Western Colorado’s local economy, world-class recreation, ranching heritage, wildlife habitat, and clean air and water.

What I believe: I’m grateful for the efforts of Coloradans to help develop this important bill, which proves that people with wide-ranging interests can forge a compromise on a common vision to protect our public lands for future generations.

2. IMPROVING ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE

What’s happening: Everywhere I go in Colorado, parents tell me that they can’t find high-quality child care – and when they do, they simply can’t afford it. This makes things that much harder for working parents, strains families’ budgets, and adds undue stress for families with young children.

What I’m doing: This week, I introduced bipartisan legislation with Tennessee Senator Blackburn to ease the burden on hardworking American families. My bill will expand access to reliable, affordable child care in our states and every corner of our country – I’ll keep working across the aisle to get this done.

3. DEFENDING AMERICANS’ REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS

Image

What’s happening: When Roe v. Wade was overturned, it was the first time since the Reconstruction era that Americans were stripped of a fundamental constitutional right. Since that dark day, women across the country have seen more and more restrictions on their freedoms, while states like Colorado face an influx of out-of-state patients seeking access to basic reproductive health care.

What I believe: Restrictions on reproductive care don’t just affect women in their states – they hurt women and families across the country. Every American deserves the right to make decisions about their own body and future regardless of where they live.

What I did: This week, I spoke at the Senate Finance Committee hearing about the importance of restoring and protecting reproductive rights on a national level. I won’t stop fighting to ensure every American woman has access to the reproductive health care she needs.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I welcomed members of Ukrainians of Colorado back to Washington this week. As the Ukrainian people continue their fight against Putin’s lawless war, I expressed my support for their brave efforts.
  • Sunday marked the start of Hispanic Restaurant Week, an opportunity to celebrate the profound influence of Colorado and our country’s Hispanic community on our national palette.
  • I was honored to receive the National Wilderness Coalition’s 2024 Wilderness Champion Award. Colorado's wilderness areas help filter our air, clean our water, and drive our outdoor economy.
