Dear Friend,

Outdoor Industry Association's Friend of the Industry Award

Last week, I was honored to receive the Outdoor Industry Association’s 2017 Friend of the Outdoor Industry Award. A major legislative accomplishment last Congress was having the Outdoor Recreation Jobs and Economic Impact Act (Outdoor REC Act) signed into law, and I’m proud to have worked in a bipartisan fashion on this important legislation. I look forward to continuing to work with members of both parties to protect Colorado’s public lands.

Keeping Government Research DATA Publicly Available

I introduced bipartisan legislation with Gary Peters (D-MI) to help federal agencies maintain open access to machine-readable databases and datasets created by taxpayer-funded research. The Preserving Data in Government Act would require federal agencies to preserve public access to existing open datasets, and prevent the removal of existing datasets without sufficient public notice. Small businesses rely on a range of publicly available machine-readable datasets to launch or grow their companies, and researchers and scientists use data to conduct studies for a variety of fields and industries.

Once data has been published and made available to the public, it should remain available to the public. Whether it’s a technology entrepreneur working on their next innovation or a retailer seeking better weather forecasting to help organize shipments, data is utilized to achieve numerous goals and plays a critical role in improving processes and our daily lives. I’m proud to work with Senator Peters on legislation that ensures government data remains readily accessible in an appropriate manner and that we continue to prioritize government transparency.

Countering North Korean Aggression

The situation on the Korean Peninsula is at the most unstable point since the armistice and Friday's missile launch is further proof of that. I support the Trump Administration's new maximum pressure policy and as part of that approach, I continue to call on the President to fully enforce my legislation, the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act.

If fully enforced, the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act has the potential to economically cripple the North Korean regime and to help ensure China works more faithfully with the United States, Japan, and South Korea to stop the madman in Pyongyang. The United States must also continue show of strength exercises in coordination with our allies, so that North Korea understands that all options are on the table to deter aggression.

I joined Fox Business, Fox News, and CNN last week to discuss North Korea, President Trump's first 100 days, Syria, and working for all Coloradans. Click on the images below to watch the full interviews.

Fighting for Our Scientific Community

Last week, I also received the George E. Brown, Jr. Award and met with the President, senior leadership, and Coloradans from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-USA). Recently, I joined with Democrat Senator Gary Peters to call for a major increase in science funding and last Congress we worked together to pass the American Innovation and Competitiveness Act into law. I look forward to continuing the fight to support our scientific community!
