1 BIG THING: HELPING COLORADANS RECOVER FROM THE GOLD KING MINE SPILL

Image

What happened: In 2015, the Gold King Mine spill released 3 million gallons of polluted mining wastewater into the Animas and San Juan rivers, affecting waterways and communities in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, the Southern Ute reservation, and the Navajo Nation.

What’s happening: Almost a decade later, too many Coloradans still suffer the effects of this disaster. The blowout continues to hurt families, farmers, and outdoor recreation companies in Durango and throughout Southwest Colorado who depend on the river for their livelihoods

What I’m doing: I introduced legislation alongside Senator Hickenlooper to help Coloradans finally heal from this disaster. Our bill will help recover certain remaining costs and damages incurred from the spill and help make Southwest Colorado communities whole again.

2. DELIVERING CLEAN WATER TO COLORADO COMMUNITIES

Image

What’s happening: Everyone deserves access to a safe, reliable water supply, no matter where they live. However, far too many Coloradans – especially in our rural and Tribal communities – face the challenges of aging or unsafe water infrastructure.

This week: I welcomed over $170 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for Colorado to expand access to clean water and reliable energy. These dollars will support 12 important projects across our state from Holly to Del Norte.

What I believe: I’m grateful our state will benefit from this critical nationwide investment. Access to clean water is a human right, and I will continue working to ensure every Colorado community has the resources they need and deserve.

4. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • Thursday was Latina Equal Pay Day. Despite representing an important and growing part of our workforce, Latinas still make just 51 cents to every dollar paid to white men. I will continue fighting to close this unfair wage gap.
  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that early cancer detection saves lives, and regular cancer screenings can make all the difference. This month, encourage your loved ones to schedule their annual check-ups.
  • Good news: Four Colorado schools received National Blue Ribbon awards from the U.S. Department of Education. Congratulations to each of these schools on this incredible achievement.
