1 BIG THING: CELEBRATING A MAJOR INVESTMENT IN COLORADO’S RAILWAYS
Joining Governor Polis and Colorado leaders to celebrate funding for Colorado’s railways.
Great news: The U.S. Department of Transportation announced $129 million in funding for Colorado’s railways, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This week, I joined Governor Polis, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and my Colorado Congressional colleagues in Westminster to celebrate this historic investment.
What’s next: This investment will improve the safety and efficiency of Colorado’s railways, including by helping our state implement new traffic control systems to prevent dangerous collisions and derailments. It will also support our communities as they update freight lines, study alternative fuel technologies for rail, and modernize outdated tracks to meet our state's needs.
What I believe: Rail is a critical part of Colorado’s history, and I’m confident that this funding will help our state once again lead the way in rail innovation. This is what it looks like when we invest in America and our Colorado communities – a safer, cleaner, more connected future.
2. SUPPORTING COLORADO BUSINESSES
What’s happening: In Colorado and across the country, businesses of every size rely on workers with temporary visas to sustain their workforce. However, the cap for temporary H-2B visas was met early, meaning that employers nationwide are struggling to hire a sufficient number of seasonal laborers to support their operations.
What I’m doing: This week, I called on the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to release the maximum allowable number of these work visas for 2025. This will allow businesses across our state – from our landscaping and hospitality industries to our ski industry – to hire the employees they desperately need.
What I believe: Small businesses have a lot on their plate, and labor shortages don’t make things any easier. Colorado businesses need our support, and I’ll continue working with my colleagues to get this done.
3. ENROLLING IN HEALTH INSURANCE
What’s happening: The annual open enrollment period for marketplace health insurance has begun. During this period, Coloradans can enroll, renew, or switch health plans for the coming year.
How to enroll: Shop for a plan that works best for you and your family by visiting healthcare.gov. You can also enroll over the phone at 1-800-318-2596 and find local assistance here. Don’t wait – the deadline for coverage starting on January 1, 2025, is December 15, 2024.
