Dear Friend,

Saving Colorado's Aerospace Industry

Last week, I led the fight to protect NASA and commercial space launches, which provides a major economic boost to Colorado. The underlying language in the Iran Sanctions bill would have unintentionally sanctioned our nation’s aerospace civil and commercial aerospace industry. I introduced a bipartisan amendment to allow NASA to move forward with currently planned missions. Without its passage, NASA would potentially have had to close up to seven space missions and billions of taxpayer dollars would go to waste.

I offered the amendment for one simple reason: it will ensure NASA and our commercial space industry will continue to be the world’s leader in aerospace. Without today’s amendment, U.S. astronauts would be forced to continue to rely on Russia for access to space for even longer. I’m proud Colorado is a leader in aerospace and I will continue to support my home state’s efforts as they play a critical role in space exploration.

Sanctioning Russia and Iran

While it will likely not get the attention and coverage it deserves, Republicans and Democrats took action last week against Russia. The bipartisan legislation is a strong message to Vladimir Putin: the United States will not stand idly by as you undermine democracy and human rights around the globe.

One of President Obama’s biggest foreign policy blunders was the nuclear agreement with Iran, which emboldened Tehran to ramp up its nefarious activities, including ballistic missile tests, support for terrorism, and human rights abuses. These bipartisan sanctions are a firm response to this grave threat to U.S. national security.

Opening New Markets to Colorado Beef

Last week, the Department of Agriculture announced China had agreed to lift the ban on U.S. beef imports.

As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity, I am continuing to urge the Trump Administration to explore new trade opportunities for America’s agriculture community in Asia, and this is an important step forward. Colorado’s farmers and ranchers will see positive economic gains from this decision, and everyone involved with finally getting the ban removed should be applauded.

Science Shouldn't be a Partisan Issue

The Coloradoan published an op-ed I wrote about why science shouldn't be a partisan issue. Be sure to read it below:

When it comes to federal research funding, it’s easy to overlook the impact it has on our everyday lives. We tend to think of scientific research as an abstract concept where a scientist spends years in a lab working on their invention that never sees the light of day; but the reality is much more complex. Scientific research has a tremendous impact on our economy, our health and our national security, and most of the time we don’t even realize how federal research improves our own quality of life.

Touring Colorado

On Saturday, I visited Custer County to meet with local officials and tour the wildfire and flood damage in Wetmore. I also visited TechSTART in Cañon City to discuss how technology startups can have a positive impact on rural communities.
