Dear Friend,

It's Time to Fix Our Tax Code

Too many Colorado families have felt like they can’t get ahead over the last few years, and providing tax relief for hardworking families will jump-start the economy and put more money in their pockets. The outline released earlier this week will serve as a blueprint for the House and Senate as they begin their bipartisan hearings on how we can best fix our confusing and oversized tax code. As talks continue, I’ll make sure that the priorities and interests of Coloradans are front and center.

Providing Relief from the Affordable Care Act

Earlier this week, I introduced the Healthcare Tax Relief Act. This legislation delays the “Health Insurance Tax” created by the Affordable Care Act for one year. The tax is a fee to health insurers on their health policy premiums.

We need to look at every avenue we can to provide relief to the American people from the high costs created by the Affordable Care Act. My legislation delays a tax that once implemented would lead to even higher costs of care for Coloradans. President Obama promised that this law would drive down costs, and this tax is just another example of how that’s not even close to being reality.

Helping Fellow Americans in Puerto Rico

I sent a letter with Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) to Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry urging his Department “to work expeditiously with electric utilities across the U.S. to assist the local electric and power utilities and authorities in Puerto Rico to help restore electric services as quickly as possible in the wake of Hurricane Maria."

Fixing Wildfire Funding

It may not be getting headlines in the national news, but wildfires have burned millions of acres in the West this year and the communities impacted in Colorado need assistance. I’ve been working to advance my bipartisan legislation with Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) to stop fire borrowing for several years, and I appreciate the strong support to ensure the Forest Service has the funds it needs for clean-up and prevention efforts, while also finally requiring the government to treat wildfires like it does other natural disasters.

Introducing Justice Allison Eid

I had the opportunity to introduce Colorado Supreme Court Justice Allison Eid to the Judiciary Committee at her confirmation hearing to become the next judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Click here to watch my opening remarks.
