Fighting for Colorado During the Republican Government Shutdown

What’s happening: At midnight on October 1st, the federal government shut down due to a lapse in funding. For months, Congressional Democrats have asked Republicans and President Trump to negotiate a deal to keep the government open. If President Trump and Republicans allow critical Affordable Care Act tax credits to expire this year, Coloradans could see their health insurance premiums rise by over 300% in some parts of our state.

What I’m doing: As working families across Colorado struggle to afford health care and basic necessities, the last thing they need is a Republican budget that does nothing to address the challenges they’re facing. That is why I voted NO on Republicans’ fourth attempt to steamroll Democrats with their partisan budget bill, and will continue to do so until they have a real negotiation with Democrats to prevent health care premiums from skyrocketing. I refuse to accept my own pay as long as this shutdown lasts, as hundreds of thousands of federal workers and service members are forced to go without their own pay. I will keep fighting to fund our government and protect health care access for Coloradans.

Resources for Coloradans: Until Republicans are willing to work with Democrats to reopen the government, federal agencies are limited to only providing essential services. In the meantime, my offices remain open to help constituents and process case work. If you receive a letter from your health insurer informing you that your premiums will skyrocket next year, please call our office to share your story at 202-224-5852. 2. Honoring the Victims of the Evergreen School Shooting

What happened:
On September 10th, a horrific act of gun violence struck Colorado at Evergreen High School. In the wake of this tragedy, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to condemn the shooting, honor the victims, and express gratitude to the first responders whose bravery and swift action saved lives. The Senate unanimously passed my resolution this week.

What I believe: My thoughts are with the entire Evergreen community during this profoundly difficult time. My wife, Susan, and I continue to pray for the victims, who are still recovering. I am deeply grateful for every first responder, law enforcement officer, educator, faculty member, and neighbor who helped save lives that day. Our children deserve to grow up in a country free from the trauma and terror of senseless gun violence. I will continue pushing in Congress to advance policies that can help end gun violence and keep our kids safe.
