A message from Senator Michael Bennet

Dear Friend,

On October 1st, the federal government entered a shutdown due to a lapse in funding. For months, Congressional Democrats tried to work with Republicans and President Trump to negotiate a budget deal to keep the government open and prevent health insurance premiums from skyrocketing. We are now on day ten of the government shutdown, and I want to check in.

Yesterday, Republicans voted for the seventh time against our proposal to fund the government and extend critical tax credits that nearly 225,000 Coloradans rely on to make their health care affordable. If Republicans let this lifeline expire, Coloradans could see their health care premiums skyrocket.

At a time when working families across Colorado are struggling with rising costs, Congress should be working towards solutions. Instead, Republicans continue to put forward a partisan budget proposal that does not address the challenges Coloradans are facing. If these critical tax credits expire, families will be unable to afford coverage, forcing them to choose between paying for rent and groceries or going to the doctor – a choice no one should have to make.

Republicans and President Trump must come to the table and negotiate with Democrats in good faith to extend these tax credits and reopen our government. We must pay our troops and keep our airports running. We must get federal workers back on the job to protect our national parks and process small business loans and housing applications.

As hundreds of thousands of federal workers and service members work without pay, I refuse to accept my own paycheck until this shutdown ends. My offices will remain open throughout this shutdown to help constituents and process case work to the best of our ability. Thank you,
