Dear Friend,

Easing the Burden of Student Loan Debt

Student loan debt makes it harder and harder for graduates to get ahead. I’ve recently introduced the Student Loan Repayment Acceleration Act, legislation that would make it easier to pay off student loans. This bill would allow employers to contribute to their employees’ loans like many do for 401k plans. Every little bit helps and this can be a model for further policies to deal with the growing problem of student loan debt.

Protecting First Responders of 9/11

I've introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), that will permanently reauthorize and fund the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). This legislation would ensure that 9/11 first responders who become sick with certified 9/11 illnesses in the future would be covered by the VCF program. The VCF has already approved over 19,204 claims, and as more 9/11 first responders continue to grow ill, this bill will ensure they are covered by the VCF program. These heroes now live across the country, including in Colorado, and have sacrificed so much. After all they have done for us, our nation cannot and will not turn its back on them.

A Call for Civility

In the United States we have our political disagreements and we should cherish the rights to express our disagreements. I previously spoke about civility and its importance moving forward at the weekly leadership press conference. My colleague Senator Bennet and I were sent to Washington to work together and while we have our disagreements, we always fight for the best for our state. I hope every colleague of mine in Congress will do the same.

Visiting the Front Range

I recently had the opportunity to meet with both business and community leaders. As poverty and homelessness continue to effect the lives of Coloradans, working together as a community and finding innovative solutions is crucial. The Jefferson County Prosperity Project does just that by working to end the cycle of poverty. I appreciated the opportunity to visit the JeffCo-Arvada Head Start location where I spoke with teachers and parents about the partnership with the school and the project.

While traveling the Front Range from Evans to Johnstown, I had the opportunity to meet with Sunrise Community Health while visiting the Monfort Family Clinic, as well as Slager Trucking Company. I also had the chance to meet with the CEO of Slager Trucking, Donald Slager.

Defense Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference

Recently, innovation in the defense community was showcased in Denver as part of the Defense Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference. I had the privilege of speaking at the National Pitch Competition about the importance of making innovative strides in defense. Congratulations to Rebecca Fair, the co-founder and CEO of Thresher, and this year’s winner of the pitch competition.
