Fighting Back Against Trump’s Threats to the American Election System

What’s happening: Since the beginning of this Administration, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have taken steps to try to disenfranchise Americans. Trump’s SAVE America Act would require voter rolls be routinely given over to the federal government; impose new document requirements for voter registration that many Americans do not have easy access to, particularly women, rural, and elderly voters; and force voter registration to take place in person – instead of by mail, online, or automatically at the DMV. On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order attempting to limit mail‑in voting nationwide. This executive order also pushes the Administration to create a “national voter list” of confirmed U.S. citizens eligible to vote by mail in each state.

What I believe: Trump’s ridiculous and desperate attempts to undermine U.S. elections are an insult to anybody who believes in our Constitution and the rule of law. By the end, he will have undermined every citizen’s right to vote — Democrat, Republican, or Unaffiliated. These attacks on our elections are something that every American should fight. We Coloradans, who have the gold-standard election system, will fight this tooth and nail.

What I’m doing: This month, I spoke on the Senate floor to expose how the SAVE America Act would make it harder for ordinary American citizens to register and vote. This week I also called out Trump’s mail‑in voting executive order and will continue to oppose this Administration’s blatant efforts to undermine our public elections, including by ensuring no portion of the SAVE America Act gets included in a partisan reconciliation bill.

2. Thanking our Interns for Their Hard Work

Meeting with my Denver and D.C. spring interns

What happened: Over the past few months, I sat down with my office’s spring intern class in Denver and D.C. to discuss everything from the importance of bipartisan cooperation to the future of the American political system.

What I believe:
It’s always great to meet with our interns to hear what’s on the minds of the next generation of leaders. My office would not be the same without their hard work and dedication to the people of Colorado.

3. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • As Colorado works hard to protect our LGBTQ+ community, the Supreme Court’s decision on conversion therapy is extremely disappointing. The facts are simple: Conversion therapy is harmful and no Coloradan should be forced to change who they are. This decision only strengthens our resolve to protect the rights, freedoms, and futures of the LGBTQ+ community and youth. At a time when so many are facing increasing discrimination, we must protect — not abandon — the rights of all Coloradans.
  • Attorney General Pam Bondi has been using her office to repeatedly attack Colorado to advance the President's political agenda and exact retribution. I opposed her nomination from the beginning; and since her confirmation, I have worked to fight the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) attacks on Colorado and other states. It's clear Trump will continue to use the DOJ, an independent agency, for his political benefit and whoever he appoints as Attorney General will follow his illegal direction. I will keep pushing the DOJ to follow the law and hold those accountable for illegal acts against our state and our people.
  • As a former school superintendent, I saw firsthand how educators spend their own money to give kids what they need to succeed in the classroom. That's why I introduced my bipartisan SEED Act to help early childhood educators cover the cost of supplies, books, and other classroom materials. With last week's unanimous vote by the House Ways and Means Committee, we are one step closer to ensuring all educators, especially those who teach our youngest children, can deduct these school supply costs.
  • Coloradans deserve energy affordability. The Trump Administration has continued to force Northwest Colorado to keep the aging Craig power plant open — overriding private business decisions, driving up electricity costs for Coloradans, and making it harder for the region to plan for its future. Federal intervention like this makes long-term planning impossible — this is not how you operate a business, plan an electric grid, or help a community stay prosperous. I will continue to fight to secure reliable and affordable energy for  all Coloradans.
  • On Tuesday, Denver celebrated Si Se Puede Day, and all of Colorado celebrated the newly named Farm Workers Day. This day belongs to immigrants, farm workers, and those who refused to stop fighting for dignity, justice, and the labor rights they're owed. This day honors the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor movement and has always been larger than one man. We must continue to stand with the workers, families, and communities that the UFW movement was built to protect.
  • On Wednesday, NASA sent astronauts on a mission to the moon for the first time since 1972 — a historic achievement made possible by thousands of Coloradans. This week, we celebrate the Artemis II launch and wish the crew success on their journey. Colorado Proud!
  • This week, I joined 24 of my Senate colleagues to press President Trump on his decision to ease sanctions on Russian and Iranian oil exports – and the lack of planning for his unauthorized war against Iran. These actions speak once again to this Administration’s troubling lack of strategic foresight, which has jeopardized our servicemembers across the region and spiked costs for Americans here at home. I will continue fighting against this President’s recklessness as we defend our troops and national security.
  • Chag Pesach Sameach, Colorado! I’m wishing Colorado’s Jewish community a peaceful and meaningful Passover with family and loved ones.
  • Happy Easter! I hope all who celebrate in Colorado and across the world have a joyous holiday.
