I spoke with several radio broadcasters on my weekly call about my 99 county meetings, the October recess, potential changes in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and North Korea's missile tests.

Representative government is a two-way street, so I hold hour-long question-and-answer sessions in each of Iowa's 99 counties at least once every year. Over the last two weeks, I had meetings in 30 counties to meet and speak with Iowans.

President Trump nominated Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey to be Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It's hard to imagine someone better qualified to serve America's farmers in this position than Bill Northey. I’ve no doubt he will be an asset to the farmers who utilize USDA programs to ensure the most affordable, safest food supply in the world is available every year for all Americans.

The American people rely on the Red Cross to respond to natural disasters, and there’s a tradition of the Red Cross’ providing essential services during crises. In return, the Red Cross has an obligation to get the most bang for the buck. You can watch a news segment below on my oversight of the Red Cross.

I have long advocated for nursing home oversight and ensuring quality of care for nursing home residents. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General found that 28 percent of 134 potential incidents of abuse or neglect in 33 states may not have been reported to law enforcement. Three of the 134 potential incidents were in Iowa. It’s unacceptable for more than one-fourth of potential crimes in nursing homes to apparently go unreported. I'm following up to make sure the agency in charge will take immediate action to fix this problem.
