Terrorists Crossing Southern Border Must Be Addressed

Image

In fiscal year 2023, 169 migrants with positive terrorism watchlist matches were apprehended along our southern border. Even if these apprehensions represent a small minority of the people trying to cross our border, the potential devastation from a single individual with malign intentions cannot be overstated.

This week, I led a group of senators in sending a letter to President Biden expressing deep concern about the rise in terrorists crossing the southern border and asking for plans to bolster border and internal security measures.

We’re seeing rising violence and economic crises around the world, and it’s pushing many people towards our borders. The record levels of illegal crossings combined with a rise in Border Patrol apprehensions of those on the U.S. terror watch list must be addressed, particularly in light of the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.

Notre Dame Forum

Image

Last Friday, it was an honor to join University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins and U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) at the University of Notre Dame Forum to discuss our work in the Senate and how we can encourage civility in politics. We can agree and disagree on issues, but we are all Americans who care about our country and its future.

DHS, FBI Need to Prioritize Prevention of Antisemitic Violence

Last week, I joined with a bipartisan group of colleagues in sending a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray requesting their immediate attention on resources that help protect the safety and security of Jewish Americans, religious institutions, and organizations in our nation that are vulnerable to increased threats and violence as a result of the terrorist attack in Israel on October 7. Free speech is always protected in the public square, but speech inciting violence, as well as threats and acts of terrorism and violence, must be taken seriously.

Meeting with Families of Hostages Held by Hamas

Image

Last week, I met with family members of hostages currently being held by Hamas. Their stories are heartbreaking, and I expressed sympathy and support on behalf of Hoosiers.

Hamas must immediately free all hostages and return them to safety. I recently joined with a bipartisan group of colleagues to introduce a resolution condemning Hamas’ attacks on Israel and demanding that Hamas release all hostages and allow for their safe return home.

Reforming Chips Permitting Will Maximize CHIPS and Science Act Impact

I joined over 100 lawmakers in sending a letter to Senate and House Armed Services Committees leaders urging them to preserve the language based on the Building Chips in America Act in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

This bipartisan legislation will maximize the impact of the CHIPS and Science Act enacted last year by streamlining federal environmental reviews for chip manufacturing projects. This will prevent construction delays for projects across the country. More about this legislation is available here.

Remembering Coach Bob Knight

Some of my best memories growing up in an IU family were watching games with my Dad, from IU-Purdue nail biters to Big Ten/NCAA title runs. I join with all IU fans in mourning the passing of legendary Coach Bob Knight.

There are a lot of great reflections on Bob Knight's career and legacy out there, but these words from Coach Painter are some of the best.
