Congratulations
to
Bill
Northey for
being
sworn-in
as Undersecretary
for
Farm
Production
and
Conservation
at
the
U.S.
Department
of
Agriculture. I
cannot
think
of
anyone
more
passionate
or
better
equipped
to
ensure
America’s
farm
programs
are
properly
administered
than
Undersecretary
Northey.

I
joined
Senator
Ernst
and
Iowa
Representatives
Young,
Blum,
Leobsack
and
King
in
sending
a
letter
to
President
Trump
urging
him to
consider
the
consequences
of
imposing
tariffs
on
imported
steel
and
aluminum
that
could
harm
Iowa’s
farmers
and
manufacturers.
I'm
disappointed
that
the
tariffs
were
applied,
as
it
could
strain relationships
with
reliable
trading
partners
and
be
detrimental
to
the
nation’s
economic
success.
The
Senate
Judiciary
Committee,
which
I
chair,
scheduled
a
hearing
to
take
place
on
March
14,
2018,
to
focus
on
the
tragic
shooting
that
occurred
in
Parkland,
Florida. You
can
watch
that
hearing
live
on
the
Senate
Judiciary
Committee's
Facebook
page. I’ve introduced
my
own
legislation
and
joined
other
bipartisan
legislative
measures
to
improve
school
safety
and
prevent
guns
from
falling
into
the
wrong
hands,
including:
- Senator
Hatch’s
bill
that
would
fund
school
security
improvements
and
prevention
programs
to
stop
school
violence
before
it
happens;
- Senator
Alexander's
bill
that
would
allocate
federal
dollars
for
school
counselors,
alarm
systems,
security
cameras
and
crisis
intervention
training;
- Senator
Cornyn's
bill
that
would
require
federal
agencies
to
report
relevant
information
to
the
NICS
database.
Senator
Dianne
Feinstein
of
California
and
I
wrote
a
letter
urging
our
colleagues
to
allocate
funding
for
the
needs
of children
in
the
foster
care
system
who
have
been
impacted
by
parental
substance
abuse.
Substance
abuse
by
a
parent
is
the
second
leading
cause
of
children
entering
foster
care.
The
opioid
and
drug
overdose
crisis
has
had
devastating
impacts
on
communities
and
families
across
our
nation. Investing
in
prevention
and
treatment will
help
reduce
the
number
of
children
and
families
affected
by
this
epidemic.
