The Milan Miracle at 70

On March 20, 1954, Milan High School – enrollment 161 – defeated Muncie Central in the Indiana High School Boys State Championship, making the Indians the smallest school to ever win the single class tournament in Indiana. The team and town are the inspiration for the 1986 movie Hoosiers.

Last week, I celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Milan Miracle on the Senate floor. In my remarks, I said, “The memory of Milan lasts because their team and town symbolizes what keeps our communities together…And it’s an inspiration still, across small towns, and struggling places, waiting on their own miracle, where the basketball team brings people together and makes them feel proud of the place they call home. That is why we still celebrate little Milan beating mighty Muncie Central 70 years on.”

I recently participated in a fireside chat during the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute’s National Security Innovation Base Summit. I discussed the implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act, how private sector innovation can benefit our national security, and the positive benefits of artificial intelligence for America’s defense. Biden Administration Should Withdraw EV Mandate

I joined a group of 121 Senators and Representatives in sending a letter to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman calling for the withdrawal of the Biden Administration’s proposed Corporate Fuel Economy standards for passenger cars and light-duty trucks. The proposed standards do not comply with federal law and would effectively require the mass production of electric vehicles and a phase out of gas-powered cars and trucks.

Americans should be able to choose the vehicle that best fits their needs and budget rather than having the federal government dictate what they can and cannot drive. This represents yet another attempt by the Biden Administration to impose its agenda on American families.

The American Economic Independence Act

In recent years, we have experienced the economic and security risks associated with relying on a strategic rival’s supply chains for a wide variety of industries.

I joined a bipartisan group to introduce the American Economic Independence Act, which would require the President to submit to Congress a comprehensive threat analysis of the national security risks posed by economic integration with China in key economic sectors including financial services, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and manufacturing. The Executive Branch would then be tasked with providing recommendations to Congress to mitigate the national security threat posed by China in each economic sector.

This bill would promote American economic independence and help prevent any potential threats that may stem from future economic integration with China.

End Tuberculosis Now Act

Image

Hoosier author John Green has dedicated his time and resources to the fight against tuberculosis, which is a preventable, treatable, and curable disease that affects millions each year. It was great to meet with him and other advocates to talk about the bipartisan End Tuberculosis Now Act.

I’m leading this bill to make the elimination of tuberculosis a priority for the United States. Click here to learn more about this legislation.
