There’s $350M sitting around right now. Let’s use it to get our health workers the gear they need!

Doctors, nurses, and other health care providers are serving on the front lines in our battle against COVID-19 and risking their own lives to save others every single day.

We must ensure they have access to personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect themselves and ensure they can continue treating our loved ones.

Thankfully, Congress and the president have acted swiftly to build up our stockpile of PPE and other materials and get that out to our hospitals and health care workers – in Iowa and across the country.

But why stop there? We could help build up our National Strategic Stockpile all the more, and in the process, get rid of an outdated, antiquated campaign fund and put YOUR tax dollars to good use.

Right now, as you read this, more than $350 million in taxpayer dollars is sitting idle in the Presidential Election Campaign Fund.

This is simple. We should immediately move that money to where it’s critically needed: let’s put it toward more masks and PPE for the health care workers who are on the front lines of this pandemic. Doing so could provide millions of masks and PPE without adding a penny to our national debt.

Not a single one of the major presidential candidates in the now dwindling 2020 field has asked for financial support from this fund.  In fact, no successful candidate for the presidency has requested assistance from the program since 2004!

March Squeal Award: the unused, unneeded Presidential Election Campaign Fund

For these reasons, I am giving my March 2020 Squeal Award to the obsolete, outdated, and unused Presidential Election Campaign Fund.

It is also why I have introduced legislation to immediately redirect the hundreds of millions of unused tax dollars in the dormant election fund to the Strategic National Stockpile, to pay for specialized face masks and other personal protective equipment—stat!
