 Happy 250th Birthday, America

Image

As our country turns 250 years old this week, I shared a few thoughts about what makes America exceptional. You can find my comments here.

What I love most about our country is the character of our people. We are hard-working, free, and proud. We bow to no one. We're fiercely competitive, and we're committed to winning collectively and individually.

Independence Day is about spending time with family and loved ones but also reflecting on our unique history. To the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice, to make the American dream a reality, we are forever grateful. To the generations who will carry America into the future, we are forever hopeful.

We celebrate not only how far we have come, but also how far we will go. We are blessed to live in this country, and I am thankful for those who keep it secure.

Happy 4th of July, Hoosiers.

Visit to Rensselaer

Image

I enjoyed a walking tour of Rensselaer with Mayor Jeff Phillips and local leader Jason Armold. We stopped by Brick Street Ice Cream, and the downtown area is filled with beautiful murals. Both the ice cream and artwork are worth a visit. Learn more here.

Cummins Seymour Engine Plant Visit

I recently visited the Cummins Seymour Engine Plant to learn more about their operations and investments in their skilled workforce. A large segment of Indiana's economy is powered by Hoosiers who work hard, build reliable and innovative products, and keep our communities moving forward.

More Financing Options for Students

Image

Hoosier students should not be forced to choose between a quality education and an affordable one.

I joined with Senate colleagues to introduce the bipartisan Outcomes-Based Financing (OBF) for Students Act. Our legislation would expand access to innovative financing options for students pursuing postsecondary education and workforce training while establishing strong consumer protections to safeguard participants.

With the appropriate safeguards, outcomes-based financing can give students an alternative to taking on more traditional student loan debt while gaining the skills they need for successful careers.

Read more about this legislation here. See the full text of the bill here.

Made in the USA Day

Image

This week we recognized Made in the USA Day, which is a great opportunity to support American manufacturers and local businesses.

Our skilled Hoosier workforce drives our economy and helps make Indiana the most manufacturing intensive state in our country.

One Year of the Working Families Tax Cuts

Image

One year ago, the Working Families Tax Cuts was signed into law by President Trump. I was proud to vote for this legislation that delivered the largest tax cut in history for working and middle-class Hoosiers, expanded the child tax credit, and helped spur new economic growth and job creation in Indiana.

Millions of Americans have benefitted from the law’s provisions, including no tax on tips and overtime, the enhanced senior deduction, and the increased Child Tax Credit. This law expanded 529 savings plans to cover vocational schools and apprenticeship programs, helping more Americans gain the skills needed for good-paying careers.

This law also includes my proposal to incentivize job-creating R&D activity in the United States to drive our innovation future and protect our national security. These critical R&D provisions will help America outcompete and out-innovate China.

And this law significantly invested in border security to build more of our border wall and hire more border patrol officers. It includes sensible reforms to strengthen government assistance programs by rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse and improving work requirements for able-bodied adults without young children or disabled dependents.

We wrote this law to provide relief for workers, families, seniors, and small businesses and to increase the safety of our citizens. We are seeing those objectives realized.

Help for Hoosiers

Navigating federal agencies can be difficult. My staff and I are here to assist Hoosiers who are having trouble receiving benefits, have questions regarding a program or procedure, or have not heard back from these agencies in a timely manner.
