Hello Friend, I have often said, “when a parent has a choice, a child has a chance." With another school year coming to a close, I have been hard at work securing educational opportunity for American families. Experts estimate significant learning loss due to prolonged school closures during the pandemic. We must open pathways to academic success for our children moving forward. School Choice: Foundation to Future
This week, I had the opportunity to speak with Congressman John Moolenaar (R-MI-4) and former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos about the success of school choice initiatives across the nation and growing support for school choice among voters. During the discussion Secretary DeVos gave valuable insight into the education landscape in America. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed the spotlight on educational options like never before, and an increasing number of states are providing access to these options for families. Secretary DeVos was also able to talk about her work during her tenure at the Department of Education, dispel common school choice myths, and explain current education policies. The entire conversation can be found HERE. Opening Pathways to Higher Education
A college education often changes the trajectory for not just one individual, but future generations. I believe we should remove as many barriers to this life changing opportunity as possible, which is why Senator Hassan and I introduced the FAFSA Simplification Act. This bill would ease the burden for students applying for federal aid by reducing the paperwork, dismissing needless requirements, and improving the determination process for unaccompanied homeless– and foster care youth. Making Student Loans Clear
There is a saying, “When you know better, you do better.” That is why I reintroduced the bipartisan Student Loan Modernization Act. This would provide more transparency for individuals applying for federal student loans. Applicants should have access to a clear disclosure form that would empower them to be more informed and responsible borrowers. This bill would make that a reality. IGNITE HBCUs
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have proven to be vital producers of leaders across multiple sectors since their inception. Not only have HBCUs produced iconic Americans like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Booker T. Washington, but they also contribute nearly $15 billion to their communities, produce 134,000 jobs, and contribute $46.8 billion in alumni career earnings. To support and enhance the ability of HBCUs to educate and create new generations of leaders, I have introduced the IGNITE HBCU Act. This bill will provide for the revitalization of HBCU campus infrastructure, encourage public and private investments, and lay the foundation for community-based partnerships that will complement the missions of these schools. Thanks for keeping up with the latest in my push to ensure every young American has access to a high quality, life-changing education!
