Welcome back to my broadband and connectivity newsletter. You can sign up for all my issue-specific newsletters as well as my weekly update here. Also, please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
As the pandemic made clear, broadband is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Unfortunately, too many folks have been left behind in the new, digital age. Nearly 20 million Americans—including more than 650,000 South Carolinians—lack internet or adequate broadband speed, resulting in challenges to their education, health care, business, and more. I am working to close those gaps and connect every American to success.
Expanding Internet Access
In March, Senator Graham and I reintroduced the State Fix Act to provide $20 billion for broadband infrastructure in communities with little to no internet access. The bill will also use a reverse auction method to select broadband services at the lowest cost, ensuring not a penny is wasted.
By enabling folks to take classes, start businesses, or search for jobs online, this act will provide tens of thousands of Americans the tools they need to reach their full potential.
Investing in Future Generations
I firmly believe the best education is one that equips the next generation of workers to face tomorrow’s challenges. That’s why I recently introduced the Improving Minority Participation and Careers in Telecommunications (IMPACT) Act—to give students the skillsets to thrive in the growing broadband industry.
This bill would partner with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other institutions of higher learning to develop job-training programs in the telecommunications field. Our nation’s broadband needs are only increasing, and the IMPACT Act will empower the next generation to lead us into a more connected future.
Thank you for supporting and keeping up with these efforts. Rest assured I will continue my work until we equip every South Carolinian—and every American—with the broadband needed to achieve their dreams.
Sincerely,
