Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. In addition to these weekly updates, you can sign up to receive other issue-specific newsletters here. Also, please remember to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Serving Our Seniors
Seniors from all across the nation are flocking to South Carolina for its beaches, growing towns, and—most importantly—kindhearted people. In the Palmetto State, we truly care for those who have gone before us, and together we’re working to improve their lives. But there is still more to be done!
As ranking member of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, I held a virtual field hearing at the Waring Senior Center in Charleston this week to discuss how we can help seniors “live their best lives now.” Throughout the hearing, six distinguished witnesses examined how Americans can maintain physical and mental vitality as they age.
My mom—who for the last 45 years has served as a nurse’s assistant in Charleston—always taught me the importance of taking care of those who can’t take care of themselves. I’m honored to bring that lesson to life by championing those older Americans who have made a way for us.

Back-To-School Town Hall
Shuttering classrooms last year resulted in tragic learning loss for children and increased difficulty for parents trying to make ends meet. Our kids—and their families—deserve better.
That’s why I held a back-to-school town hall on Facebook Live this week. As we head into the new school year and continue to face the pandemic, I wanted to hear from those whose voices are most important in the education conversation: parents. Unlike Washington bureaucrats, or big-labor bosses, parents unequivocally know what’s best for their children. I enjoyed hearing their perspectives and answering their questions on how we can safely conduct in-person learning and improve education outcomes for all children.

Restraining Reckless Spending
As you may know, Democrats in Congress are currently pushing a deeply partisan $3.5 trillion spending proposal—one that will increase inflation and demand trillions of taxpayer dollars. Yet despite the negative impact such a bill would have on the lives of all Americans, Senate Democrats are continuing their work behind closed doors to draft this bill.
This week, I signed a letter demanding that Finance Committee Republicans be included in a full and open dialogue about this bill and its implications. The American people deserve a proper vetting process that—in keeping with tradition—includes members of both parties. Read more about the letter here.
Sincerely,
