Dear Friend,

Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!

The Week In Review

This week in Congress, I focused on issues ranging from energy production and communist China’s influence at American colleges, to calling out the Biden administration’s burdensome regulations which have crippled small businesses. At the end of the day, whether it’s making energy affordable, lowering the cost of living or calling out the national security threat communist China poses, I'll never stop fighting to protect the American Dream for the next generation.

To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

Working For You

Increasing Domestic Energy Production

The Biden administration continues to make decisions that weaken our nation's energy security and economic stability. They cancelled oil and gas leases in Alaska and agreed with China to shut down American fossil fuels. As a result, the U.S. has become dangerously dependent on foreign nations for our natural resources. This has caused record-high energy bills, which has been a struggle for families and small businesses.

To put an end to this, I joined Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) in introducing the Promoting Domestic Energy Production Act, which would lower energy production costs and create savings for American families. I will work tirelessly to end the current administration's assault on our nation’s energy dominance and ensure that American families are no longer burdened with high energy costs.

Calling Out the Biden Administration’s Disastrous Economic Policies

At this week’s Senate Banking Committee hearing, I questioned leaders of eight major banks about the Biden administration’s crushing regulations and their negative impact on America’s economy. The latest proposal from this administration’s progressive regulatory regime – the Basel III Endgame – would limit the availability of credit for housing, severely restrict lending for small businesses and cut into retirement savings.

I also joined CNBC’s Squawk Box to call out the devastating regulatory burden this administration has put on hardworking Americans. Millions impacted by Bidenomics stand to lose even more under the burdensome red tape of Biden’s financial regulators, and I am committed to using my role as Ranking Member of the Banking committee to do all I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Supporting Our Moms

Research shows drug overdose deaths among pregnant women and new moms skyrocketed from 2018 through 2021, with fentanyl and synthetic opioids as the leading cause of overdose.

To combat this opioid crisis, I joined Senator Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.) in introducing the Pregnant and Postpartum Women Treatment Reauthorization Act to ensure women across the United States have reliable access to mental health and substance use disorder care. I’ve spoken at length about the devastating effects and vast reach of illicitly trafficked fentanyl in this country. Its deadly impact on new and expecting mothers is yet another reason that seriously addressing this crisis must be our government’s top priority. As we fight to secure our border and curb the flow of illicit drugs into this country, we have an obligation to provide essential resources for these new and expecting moms.

Removing the CCP From America’s Schools

For the decades, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has pushed its agenda on our nation’s campuses through student organizations such as Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs). As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I led my Senatecolleagues in sending a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, urging the U.S. Department of Justice to determine whether CSSAs need to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) for their work on behalf of the CCP. I believe this action would help combat CCP influence on campus and strengthen America’s national security.

Protecting our Farmers

As a proud supporter of the hardworking men and women who feed our country, I have consistently pushed back on the Biden administration’s harmful and misguided policies that hurt our farmers. Unfortunately, the Department of Labor’s (DOL) most recent overreach would give labor unions unprecedented access to temporary foreign agricultural workers and pressure them into unionization. The proposal would add yet another unnecessary regulatory burden on American farms, hurting both our farmers and American consumers.

I joined 17 of my Senate colleagues in writing a letter to the DOL opposing its policy. I will always fight to protect our food chain and make sure the government is supporting American farmers, not targeting them.

Palmetto State Pride

This week, I’m spilling the sweet tea on the Summerville Orchestra – the 2023 winner of the American Prize in Orchestral Performance in the community division. Countless hours of practice and instruction went into winning this competition, one of the nation’s most comprehensive contests in the performing arts. We should give honor to whom honor is due, and I’m proud to recognize Summerville Orchestra’s incredible work and talent. They represented the Lowcountry with excellence!
