This week, my comprehensive legislation targeting the fentanyl crisis – the FEND Off Fentanyl Act – was signed into law. This landmark win adds another tool we can use to save American lives and end the devastation poisoning our communities.

In addition to leading this commonsense bill, I urged our nation to reject the senseless antisemitism washing over Ivy League college campuses. The rampant hate at Columbia University and elsewhere is un-American, and I was proud to lead calls for Columbia’s president to resign for her role in allowing antisemitic bigotry to take hold on campus.

As I led efforts to defend American values, I was proud to celebrate the Lady Gamecocks’ basketball championship win in our great state. There’s no place I’d rather call home than South Carolina. It is the honor of my life to represent y’all every day in the United States Senate!

Paving the Pathway to End the Fentanyl Crisis

This week, my FEND Off Fentanyl Act became law! Now, we are one step closer to helping save American lives and protecting communities from the deadly fentanyl trade.

We know that Chinese chemical suppliers are producing the ingredients for this deadly drug and shipping them to manufacturers in Mexico who mix them into fentanyl. Then, the product is trafficked across our border by callous cartels who sell it for fortunes, profiting from Americans suffering from addiction.

So, after hearing from countless South Carolinians who have lost loved ones or watched their communities be devastated by this poison, I set out to craft a comprehensive solution to tackle the illicit supply chain. I started work on this bill last year in my capacity as the lead Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, where I wrote and introduced the FEND Off Fentanyl Act – directing the Treasury Department to use our economic national security tools to go after the finances of the Chinese chemical suppliers and Mexican drug cartels – just like we do with Russian oligarchs.

No one should get rich off American lives. To end the deadly flow of fentanyl, we need to take away the murderous money that fuels it.

I’m so proud to have this bill signed into law. I will be keeping a close eye to ensure the Biden administration quickly and effectively implements the tools in this bill – Americans impacted by fentanyl will be, too.

Standing Against Hate

The ongoing, despicable antisemitic protests spreading across Ivy League college campuses have devastated our nation. This week, as rampant bigotry peaked on Columbia University’s campus, I called on its president to resign. President Shafik’s absolute failure of leadership has allowed students to turn their campus into a breeding ground for hatred. 

I also reminded these so-called “elite” institutions that their federal funding is not a right, it's a privilege. That’s why I’m fighting to pass my legislation – the Stop Antisemitism on College Campuses Act – which ensures any college campus that jeopardizes the safety of its students based on race or religion loses its federal funding. It is our responsibility as Americans to do the right thing and stand in the gap with our Jewish brothers and sisters. They shouldn’t go through this alone.

Celebrating the Lady Gamecocks

Across South Carolina, we’ve been celebrating the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team for winning the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. Their big win was achieved only through selflessness, perseverance in the face of adversity, and commitment to excellence. I was proud to join Senator Lindsey Graham in leading a Senate resolution recognizing their year of shining success!

The Washington Times:  Columbia President Minouche Shafik faces rising calls from Congress to step down

Liberal elites at America’s Ivy League institutions continue to turn a blind eye to rampant antisemitism sweeping their campuses. This week, the Washington Times covered my calls on Columbia University’s president to resign for her failure to address the bigotry on her campus.

Reporting for the Washington Times, Valerie Richardson writes, “Calls for Columbia President Minouche Shafik to resign surged Monday over what congressional critics described as her failure to rein in the virulent anti-Israel protests that have engulfed the Ivy League institution. Other congressional lawmakers urging her to step down include Sens. John Fetterman, Pennsylvania Democrat, and Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican. ‘President Nemat ‘Minouche’ Shafik needs to resign immediately for allowing students to turn their campus into a breeding ground for hatred,’ Mr. Scott said in a Monday statement.”

This week, I’m sharing the sweet tea on Keyana Hatton, an art teacher at South Aiken Baptist Christian School. She made it to the top 10 in Reader’s Digest’s America’s Favorite Teacher competition — an accomplishment that she said she “can’t believe.” I’m proud to celebrate her brilliance and boldness in paving a pathway for kids to flourish in the classroom!
