This week, Republicans got funding for Border Patrol and ICE across the finish line. President Trump signed the Secure America Act into law, which will make sure these critical law enforcement agencies are funded throughout the president’s term so that Democrats can no longer block their funding. This legislation will deliver resources to keep our border secure, combat human trafficking, and stop the flow of deadly drugs into our country. While every Democrat voted against funding for the men and women who protect our homeland, Republicans made sure we got the job done.

Improving Child Literacy

Literacy is one of the most valuable tools in life we can give students, but our nation is seeing a decline in reading outcomes. I joined the READ Act to strengthen federal grants that will help improve literacy instruction and reading outcomes. This bill is about making sure our youth have the high-quality education they deserve to succeed in life and unlock their God-given potential.

Preserving History

As we approach the 250th birthday of America, we’re reminded how preserving our nation’s history is vital to not only celebrating but learning from the past as we strive toward a more perfect union. The African American Civil Rights Network plays an important role in telling our nation’s story, and I’ve introduced legislation to reauthorize the program and provide resources to support the preservation, education, and tourism at sites that played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement nationwide. As home to the largest share of AACRN sites in the country, South Carolina proves the immense value of reauthorizing this program and making sure future generations can walk these historic grounds, learn from our past, and continue striving for a future where the promise of the American Dream is within reach for all.

How do we get Ai right?

The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee held a hearing on how artificial intelligence can strengthen the American economy, support small businesses, protect consumers, and keep the United States ahead of China and other adversaries. As Chairman of the committee, I’m working to make sure that Congress asks the right questions, listens to experts, and ensures America remains the best place in the world to build and deploy responsible innovation. For the people in South Carolina and across this nation, the real question is whether this technology makes life better. If we get this right, the answer can be yes.

Ahead of reopening, Church Street Bridge workers get lunch from Greenville chefs

A group of downtown Greenville restaurants and chefs provided lunch for the construction crew working on the Church Street Bridge renovation. John Malik, a local chef, organized the lunch to show appreciation for the hardworking construction workers and was able to connect with several restaurants who wanted to contribute food, drinks, and space. The construction team has worked on the bridge for more than a year, and a grand reopening of the Church Street Bridge is expected to be on June 15!

Sen. Tim Scott questions Treasury Secretary Bessent on opportunity zones at the Senate Finance Committee hearing

EU.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), member of the Senate Finance Committee, questioned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at the committee’s hearing on the fiscal year 2027 budget. Sen. Scott highlighted the administration’s collaboration with local and state leaders on Opportunity Zones. Across South Carolina and the nation, Opportunity Zones are bringing billions of dollars in private investments into communities that have been left behind.

Sen. Scott said, “I do think [Opportunity Zones] is one of those consequential pieces of legislation that has a generational impact in a positive way for the poorest communities in this country. Governors across the country are right now currently working on figuring out where they want the designations within their states on this 10-year new window. I’d love to have an update from you as it relates to streamlining the Opportunity Zone nomination process. As well as, if there are any best practices that governors should take into consideration that you have become aware of.”
