Making homeownership more affordable and accessible is key to expanding opportunity for families across South Carolina and the nation. This week, the Senate and the House passed my landmark housing affordability legislation, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. I know the power of a safe place to call home because I watched my mother work hard to make that dream possible for our family in North Charleston. With this bill now cleared by Congress, we are one step closer to helping more Americans put down roots, build a better future, and find not just a house, but a home.

Protecting Taxpayers From Court Errors

Taxpayers should not pay the price for clerical errors in court decisions. This week, I introduced the Tax Court Parity Act to relieve taxpayers burdened by the current system and allow the court to correct mistakes in prior decisions, including clerical errors, newly discovered evidence, or defective judgments. This legislation would make sure a small business owner in Greenville, a family farmer in the Pee Dee, or a senior citizen in the Lowcountry does not pay the consequences for the court’s error!

Achieving Affordability For All

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, I led a hearing on “The Affordability Agenda.” The question before our committee was simple: how do we make this economy work for families who are already working hard, but too often find there is too much month at the end of the money? Families should never have to choose between affording their grocery bill or gas for their car. A family trying to buy their first home, a small business owner trying to expand, or a senior citizen living on a fixed income should not have to wonder whether Washington understands the pressure they are facing. Everyday life has become too expensive, and I will continue working to lower costs, expand opportunity, and put more money back in the pockets of American families.

Major James Capers, Jr., a South Carolina native, recently earned the Medal of Honor for his incredible acts of valor when his Marine Corps special operations team was ambushed during a mission in Phu Loc, Vietnam in 1967 during the Vietnam War. During his career, Major Capers and his team conducted over 50 classified missions in Vietnam, amphibious assaults, covert missions to rescue POWs, and a recovery mission for a downed B-57 bomber, while enduring countless injuries including a broken leg. Congratulations to Major Capers! His courage, leadership, and service will inspire generations, and South Carolina is proud to see you receive this well-earned honor.
