As we gathered in our nation’s capital and back home in South Carolina to lay to rest Lindsey Graham, we reflected on the lasting impact he made on our state and our nation. I was honored to speak at Lindsey’s funeral in Columbia and share about his decades of service to our country, his love for South Carolina and our nation, and the incredible friend he was to me. Lindsey always led with faith, family, and South Carolina first. He devoted his life to standing up for those who could not stand for themselves and serving the people of our state with humility. His legacy reminds us that a life of purpose is measured not by the titles we hold, but by the lives we touch. Lindsey lived authentically as the person God created him to be. I challenge each of us to honor his legacy by living as originals, just as God intended.

Achieving Fairness In Higher Education

Many higher education institutions give “preferential treatment” during the admissions process based on an applicant’s relationship with alumni or donors, which can heavily influence admissions decisions. Every student deserves a fair shot when applying to a college or university, and outcomes should not be determined by family background or connections to the institution. I introduced the Merit-Based Education Reforms and Institutional Transparency Act (MERIT Act) to level the playing field so that all students have the opportunity to work hard and pursue their version of the American Dream.

Protecting Taxpayers And Increasing Accountability

Taxpayers deserve a system that works for them, not against. As a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, I was pleased the committee advanced the Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act to protect millions of taxpayers who deal with bureaucratic red tape and to hold the IRS accountable. The legislation included three of my bills, which would improve accountability in our tax system, relieve taxpayers from bearing the consequences of the Tax Court’s clerical errors, and protect innocent spouses from tax debts caused by their spouse’s hidden income or mistakes. It’s time to make our tax system more accountable and fair for every American.

As president of the Dove Fund in Charleston, Amy Forney has dedicated herself to serving those in need across the Lowcountry. Amy works tirelessly to help individuals and families find housing stability. Her compassion and determination were recently on full display when she helped a man experiencing homelessness secure low-income housing after taking the time to build trust and connect him with the resources he needed. In just a few weeks, he'll have a place to call home. Through her leadership and selfless service, Amy is making a meaningful difference in the lives of countless South Carolinians.

Lindsey Graham was a patriot, a statesman and my dear friend

America lost a true statesman in the passing of Lindsey Graham, and I lost a good friend. Through his service in the military, the United States Senate, and in his own personal life, Lindsey showed what it means to be an upstanding man. He always led with faith, family, and South Carolina first.
 
Lindsey came from humble beginnings. He was born into a working-class family and suffered tragedy at an early age. When he was in his early 20s, his mother died of cancer, and just 15 months later, his father died of a heart attack. In these trying times, Lindsey raised his 13-year-old sister and later adopted her so she could receive his medical benefits.
 
It is that same sense of duty and sacrifice that led Lindsey Graham to public service. He wanted to help people and make sure nobody felt invisible. Through his office’s casework and his work on the Senate floor, Lindsey fought to help those who couldn’t help themselves. No matter where he was, Lindsey was always looking for people who felt like they were not seen. That is the mark of a true statesman.
