Keeping American Jobs Here at Home

Here in Michigan, we know how to make things. From the first Model T to come off the assembly line to the rocket parts that will take us to Mars, manufacturing is in Michigan’s blood. And when given a level playing field, we know that Michigan and American workers will make the best product every time.

But too many companies are boosting their bottom lines by shipping good-paying jobs overseas. And it’s hard to hold these businesses accountable when we can’t even track where their employees are located. That’s why I introduced the Outsourcing Accountability Act – so consumers know when companies are invested in creating and retaining American jobs. Consumers should be able to spend their hard-earned dollars elsewhere if they don’t want to subsidize the salaries of foreign workers.

My bill requires publicly traded companies to disclose their number of employees by location, including by state and country. Right now, these companies only have to report their overall total number of employees, making it difficult to accurately track the number of jobs they are eliminating in America and moving to foreign countries.

By making this information publicly available, companies will be incentivized to show they are committed to American jobs - and held accountable when they don’t.

But this is only one piece of the puzzle. We need a comprehensive strategy to advance our manufacturing sector by boosting American exports, cracking down on other countries that manipulate their currency and enforcing trade deals already on the books. In the Senate, I will continue fighting to ensure Michigan workers have every opportunity to compete and succeed.
