From the Hill to the Mountains

Computer Coding Emerging in West Virginia

Last year, I heard about Mined Minds, an organization that teaches computer coding skills. I reached out to them and invited them to the Logan Job Fair, an invitation they readily accepted. Since that time, Mined Minds has set up shop in West Virginia, and recently graduated eight coders from their first course in the Mountain State. I look forward to continuing to work with Mined Minds, and many other tech organizations, to develop this sector and bring good jobs to West Virginia. We already have the foundation here in West Virginia for this industry – a hard-working and creative work force, cutting-edge universities, colleges, and technical schools, and well respected tech organizations such as IBM who already have facilities in the state. I hope to work with leaders such as the CEO of IBM, who is seeking to create 25,000 “new collar jobs” across the nation in the next four years, and prove that there is no better place than West Virginia to grow and expand.  As your United States Senator, I am always looking for new opportunities for our state, and I welcome your ideas.

Making the Federal Government Work for You

West Virginians have mined the coal that forged the steel that built the great ships and tanks that Americans have served on, keeping our nation the strongest on earth. Because of this hard work and service to the nation, West Virginians have earned our fair share of federal funding.   

That’s why I recently submitted a letter to President Trump urging him to consider West Virginia’s priorities when crafting the Administration’s 2018 budget proposal. While I firmly believe that the national debt is one of our greatest threats,  we must continue to invest in the values and principles that make this nation the greatest country on earth: taking care of our children and helping those in need, strengthening our economy and creating jobs, keeping our promises to seniors and veterans, preserving national security, and investing in infrastructure and energy independence.

In the coming months, President Trump will release his 2018 budget. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, be assured that I will carefully review the President’s budget to see how it will impact our state and to make sure West Virginians have been heard. After the budget is released, the Senate Appropriations Committee will then hold hearings in all twelve subcommittees to discuss and debate the President’s budget and to make sure that West Virginia is a priority.

West Virginians and all Americans are demanding that we get our financial house in order, but we must confront our fiscal situation by clearly aligning our priorities with our core values as Americans. In the coming months, I’d like to hear from you on the President’s budget, and for your voice to be a part of the process.
