On the Road

WVU-Parkersburg Job Fair

Thanks to everyone who joined us On October 11 at West Virginia University at Parkersburg for our job fair. It was an outstanding event with 109 employers and hundreds of job seekers. While I was on campus for the job fair, I stopped by to visit WVU-P nursing students.

Arch Coal Mine in Raleigh County

Last Tuesday, I joined Department of Labor Secretary Acosta at Arch Coal's Beckley - Pocahontas Mine in Raleigh County. As I learned many years ago, seeing first-hand the operation of a mine, the environment in which our miners work, and the skill it takes to operate sophisticated machinery underground, changes your perspective on the health and safety of these miners and how dangerous this profession really is. I look forward to working with Secretary Acosta to make sure that every miner gets to return home safely to their family at the end of the day.

Recovery Point Parkersburg

Last Wednesday, I joined the Wood County community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open Recovery Point Parkersburg, a $1.78 million residential recovery program that will help those battling substance abuse. The 85-bed facility is the newest location for Recovery Point West Virginia, a nonprofit that offers recovery services at no cost to people across the state.

Capital High School JROTC Challenge Course

Last week I joined Brigadier General Harrison B. Gilliam of the West Virginia National Guard and representatives of Capital High School for the grand opening of the school’s new JROTC challenge course. I met with leaders of Capital High’s Cougar Battalion last year who were working on making the course a reality, and connected them with the West Virginia National Guard, which offered to take the lead on constructing the new obstacle course. Of course, I tried it out myself as well.

Tech Connect Summit on Coding

Also last week, I was happy to TechConnect West Virginia for its Coding & Cyber Summit, where we highlighted the importance of leveraging high-tech skills as our state’s workforce continues to grow stronger.

AFL-CIO Convention

It’s always a great day when I get to visit with my friends who make up the West Virginia AFL-CIO, like I did last week at their annual convention. Thanks to Josh Sword and everyone with the AFL-CIO for all you do for working families.

EXIM BANK Small Business Seminar

More than 30 West Virginia companies attended our event last Thursday to learn about the services the Export-Import Bank of the United States offers, and how they can expand their reach across the globe.
