On the Road

Last week I made several stops throughout the Eastern Panhandle and hosted two roundtables focusing on the opioid epidemic. I talked about securing language in the Opioid Crisis Response Act to require the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to implement Jessie's Law, (Read more here) and also about fighting to ensure our home state will continue to receive more funding to fight this epidemic.

“Deeds, not Words"

This week, I am highlighting the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Port, New York.

Established in 1943, the Merchant Marine Academy trains Midshipmen in marine engineering, navigation, ship administration, as well as maritime law, personnel management, international law, and customs.  The Merchant Marine Academy was the first federal service academy to enroll female students.

Unlike the other four academies, Midshipmen at the Merchant Marine Academy repay their service obligations through a variety of methods depending on their selected career path.  With 95% of the world’s products transported over water, Mariners are vital to the operation of our merchant fleet for both commercial and military transport during war and peace.

Known as the fourth arm of defense, merchant marine ships deliver military troops, supplies and equipment overseas to our forces and allies.  The men and women lead with integrity, honor, intelligence, dedication and competence.

U.S. Merchant Marine midshipman like Hannah Hill, class of 2019 has had opportunities to spend time in the Mediterranean—Crete, Gibraltar and Italy, as well as Bahrain, Dubai, Oman and the United Arab Emirates as part of her curriculum.  Graduates from the academy include astronauts, a state representative, authors, a union leader and a member of the Joint Task Force, as well as a professional football player, a basketball player and an Olympian.
