Bipartisan Effort to Direct Rural Broadband Funding to High-Cost Areas

I was proud to join a group of bipartisan group of senators in writing a letter urging U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue to designate a high cost set aside within the e-Connectivity Pilot Program established in the Consolidated Appropriations Act to reach rural and geographically challenged areas of the country that need it most. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), of the 24 million American households that do not have reliable, affordable, high-speed internet, 80 percent are located in rural areas.

NASA Facility to Potentially be Renamed for West Virginian, Katherine Johnson

I applaud my Senate colleagues for passing this legislation, which I was proud to cosponsor, to rename Fairmont’s NASA IV&V facility. Not only did Katherine Johnson, broaden our nation’s perceived physical limitations with her contributions to the space program, she also broke down discriminatory barriers that stood in the way of so many other women and people of color advancing in the workplace. Katherine Johnson is one of West Virginia’s finest and a groundbreaking, brilliant mathematician. No individual is more worthy of this honor than her. Through her brilliance, strength, and courage, she proved to the country that anyone—regardless of race, gender, or background—can touch the stars.

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

It is always a pleasure to get a surprise visit from my fellow West Virginians visiting our nation's capital. If you are planning a trip to Washington, be sure to stop by and say hello!

Senator Manchin enjoys a visit from Jefferson County residents, Meredith Wait, Debbie Dickinson, Marellen Ahern and Patience Wait.

I stopped by the Travelling Vietnam Wall in Parkersburg and placed a flag for a dear friend of mine, Victor Tarasuk. Our Vietnam Veterans know better than anyone that our state gave more during the Vietnam War than any other state in the country. I sincerely thank them, and all Veterans, for their unwavering service and sacrifice.

Last week, my office was a part of two job fairs in Martinsburg and Parkersburg. I have participated in or hosted nearly 40 job fairs since October 2015. Thank you to the hundreds of employers who participated, to the volunteers, and to all the job seekers who came out to explore the opportunities available in their region. “Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do”

This week I am highlighting the U.S. Air Force Academy, the youngest of the service academies and the last of my highlighted series.

The mission of this esteemed academy in Colorado Springs is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character. The Air Force Academy is one of the largest tourist attractions in Colorado. Just like the other service academies, admission is extremely competitive.

The Air Force Academy is centered on military training, academics, athletics and character development. Cadets like Isaac Childers, class of 2019 will receive the skills and knowledge needed for success as future officers. Graduates will receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force.

Air Force Academy alumni include 39 Astronauts, 35 Rhodes Scholars, 11 Legislators, 3 authors, and a Medal of Honor recipient.

Mr. George Bossie contacted our office requesting 203 West Virginia state flags. He was going on a trip to visit his sister overseas and wanted to make the trip even more meaningful, so he mapped out the American Cemetery in Normandy, and decided he would take the flags and some West Virginia soil along with him to place on all of the graves of fallen West Virginia soldiers. I was so pleased that my office was able to get him the flags and that he was able to honor our fallen heroes with such a special tribute.
