In Case You Missed It

Last week I enjoyed travelling my home state attending events in Fayette, Raleigh, Randolph and Upshur counties to meet with my fellow West Virginians and to highlight how our state benefits from the recently passed Natural Resources Management Act. I made stops to discuss broadband, economic development, and the implications of the recently passed of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and establishment of the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area, among other issues affecting our home state.

Permanent Reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)

The LWCF has provided more than $243 million to over 500 community projects in West Virginia, and was permanently reauthorized on the Natural Resources Act.  I’m honored to announce that this bill was the first that I managed as the Ranking Member on the Senate Energy Committee.  In this leadership role on the Senate Energy Committee, I was proud that this bill passed on a rare 92-8 vote.  I will continue to work in the commonsense, West Virginia way to get things done for our state and nation.

So many West Virginians attended this event to celebrate this achievement. Special thanks to the WV Land Trust, the Nature Conservancy, officials from the Park Service and many West Virginia friends who attended.

Establishment of the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area

Last week's celebration of the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area‘s impending designation as a national heritage area has been years in the making. I’m glad the Senate approved this in the Natural Resources Management Act, allowing us to showcase our state's cultural & forest heritage.

Many thanks to all who came to celebrate the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area's impending designation as a national heritage area at the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center in Elkins last week.

How May We Help You?

I truly appreciate the opportunity to hear from my fellow West Virginians. As your U.S. Senator, I am proud to be your voice with government agencies during your time of need. My goal is to provide top-notch customer service for every West Virginian who contacts me, or who may need help.  I have a team of caseworkers in each of my four offices to help you with matters of concern. While I have no direct jurisdiction in the administrative matters of any federal, state, or local agency, I welcome the opportunity to assist you with whatever problem you may be experiencing and ask that full consideration is given to your case.

Mr. Richard Woods of Charleston contacted my office for assistance with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  His concerns included his pending claim for service connected benefits, his efforts to obtain a generator to operate his sleep apnea machine, and his medical travel reimbursements.  Our office was able to obtain the reason his claim was denied and referred him to his Veterans Service Office to file for a reconsideration.   As a result of the Senator’s inquiry regarding his request for a generator and reimbursements, the VA contacted Mr. Woods to provide him with a DC power cord and battery adapter for an alternative power source for his sleep apnea machine.  The VA also processed 21 medical travel reimbursements for Mr. Woods.

Mobile Food Bank Location to Change to Best Serve Veterans

To best serve Veterans in southern West Virginia, the Beckley VA Medical Center will no longer be the location for the Mountaineer Food Bank’s monthly Veterans Table Distribution.

Due to the popularity of the event, traffic congestion became an issue at the Beckley VAMC. The decision was made in partnership with the Mountaineer Food Bank to move the mobile food bank to a new location that would not interfere with healthcare at the Medical Center.

The Veterans Table Distribution takes place on the third Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. There are income requirements. For more information about the Veterans Table Distribution contact for the Mountaineer Food Bank at 304-364-5518.

The location for next month’s mobile food bank on March 21 will be announced soon. Click here to stay up-to-date.
